Is your hard drive internal or external. i am assuming your drive is internal, plz put the drive in master slave configuration. if your older drive is in master then use the new one as slave and vice versa.to do this you have to put the jumper in the appropriate pin.plz post your findings

I have a Dell XPS 600 Desktop. I have a new HDD SATA. I installed the new HDD and I try install Windows XP by pressing F12 to boot from disk. It take me to a screen where it says, Press enter to install...

Don't press F12, that tells the Dell to restore Windows from a hidden partition located on the original hard drive. Since you are using a new drive, you need to boot from the Windows XP CD and follow the instruction to load the operating system.

Having Trouble Reinstalling XP on my Dell Dimension 3000

Here's what I would do. Download and burn any Linux disk. Install Linux and delete all partitions while doing so. After that, initiate the Windows XP installation and see if that works.

This will take care of two things:

If you can install Linux, then the hard drive is good and the partition that was previously on there will be deleted (I suspect the partition is locked which can be caused by a virus or the software used to scrub hard drive).

Check your CDs for Windows (for scratches) or it could be your actual CD drive is out (laser) which would make the installation fail. If the CDrom cannot read the disk, it locks up like that during installation...even if it read before.

When you boot from the CD you will com to the point where it tell you that there is already a version of Windows XP installed. You will need ot follow the instuctions on the screen to delete the existing partion. Then and only then will it format the drive.

Let me know how this works out for you

one chance is there for you. just do a repair which HDD drive is detecting win32 missing. just follow these steps.

Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating
the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the
system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation
for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery
Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I
repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the
Recovery Console, press R".

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the
repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read
Warning

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any
key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it
were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Dell Vostro 200 desktop with Windows XP is not able to handle two

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

Attempted to install New 320G hard drive in a Dell Dimension 3000, but the BIOs refused to see the drive at all. Despite double checking jumper settings and using other cables. The OS is Windows XP SP2,...

Check to see which bios version your computer is using. An update is probably necessary in order for the computer to detect the drive correctly.

If that doesn't work most hard drive manufacturers have software that you can install so that the bios will detect the drive correctly.

What's the make and model of the new drive?

Error loading operating system

Firstly have you set your jumpers on your hard drive setting before placing into computer. If not check if the cd rom is on the same cable, if on same cable then change the jumper.

Have you gone into bios and loaded the hard drive. If a new hard drive you will need to detect it in bios first. Then Save and exit.
To go into bios, press f1 or f2 or DEL when you first start computer. Each computer is differentand you'll have to see which you require to press.

After bios is setup, put in your copy of windows xp, or your boot disks and follow instructions to set partition and format drive, then install operating system.

If you are only installing a new secondary drive as a backup, you will still need to detect in bios first. Then load you windows and go to my computer and format the drive using windows.

Windows xp Install

First make sure the hard drive is reconogized in the BIO's, then do a clean install of XP choosing to delete the existing partition and install into the undefined space. choose to format the drive NTFS. if it still fails after this, sounds like you will need to replace the hard drive. Also the CPU speed will need to be at least 700 mhz for XP to work correctly but a higher mhz is all ways better. BPCS

About hard disk

I am assuming you got this error while trying to install Windows XP. If so, The solution to this problem will result in the LOSS OF ALL DATA ON YOUR HARD DRIVE. This is a two part process.

1) Check to make sure hard drive is seated in laptop well.
Enter BIOS and ensure that your hard drive is detected. If not, try the auto detect feature that most BIOS' have and see if this detects your hard drive. If not, try restoring the BIOS defaults and see if that works. If not, hard drive may be bad.
   Continue to part 2.

2) Insert your Windows XP CD and boot computer from the CD and wait for setup to load.
  • At the Setup Notification screen, press Enter to continue.
  • At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, hit Enter to continue.
  • Read the Windows XP Licensing Agreement and press F8 to agree.
  • On the Xp Setup screen, you'll create an installation partition, but first some housekeeping. If you have any existing partitions you must delete all of them before proceeding.  After deleting all partitions, select "Unpartitioned space" and pressing Enter. And then press Enter again to confirm the partition size as is (it should already be set to the maximum size).
  • Next, select "Format the partition using the NTFS file system" and press Enter. Xp will now install.
If the same error appears then the hard drive is probably bad.
