There are lots of guides on the internet...
BUT as a minimum you will need...
All the computers on your home network connected through the same router (Wired or Wifi).
All the computers on the same "Workgroup"..Choose a workgroup name and change all the computers to the same workgroup.
You will then need to change the properties of any drive/folder or files to enable sharing.
You can also drag stuff into the shared folder.
This can still be quite hit and miss, especially if your computers are using different versions of windows.
Good luck

Setup a new network under Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Setup a New connection > Setup a new Network. You need to make the Desktop as an Access point network. This will allow the Netbook to use the Desktop as a "router" and connect threw it to the internet. This is most likely the most time consuming way of doing it. The best bet would to pick up a cheap netgear or linksys router for better stability and ease of access.

Laptop Cannot Find Home Wireless Network

Try logging into the router with your desktop hard-wired and find the 25-digit passcode and use that to log on to the wireless network with the laptop. If not, then check if connection is good by hard-wiring the router to the laptop. Let me know what happens or if you have solved the problem.

Wireless printing

I assume you have a wireless network set up with a wireless router, since you said you have a wireless laptop.
You need to share the printer on the desktop. You also need to set up both computers to be on the same network (for example, WORKGROUP or MSHOME, or a name of your choosing).Once shared and on the same network, you can go to the laptop and add a printer--just tell it that it is a network printer.
A caution--to work without further hassle, both computers need to be running the same version of Windows. If not, you'll need the driver disk for the system on your laptop.

How do i build a local area network in windows xp?

On the machine that the printer is connected to go to Start>Control Panel>Printer and Faxes>Right click the Printer that you want to Network and Left Click Sharing> Select the Option to Share the printer and Name it something that you wil remeber. On the Laptop go to printers and Faxes select add new printer and select Network Printer. And Choose the second option Put the Name of the Computer that the printer is connected to and then printer name. Example \\Desktop\HpPhotoSmart 8100. Also you will need to check to make sure that both machines are on the same Domain\Work Group. Go to Start>Control Panel >System>Computer Name Tab ( Here verify the Machines Name)> Join or Change Domain>Put the machines on the same Workgroup if they are not, Do the same on the laptop. To test this, on the laptop go to Start>run and type \\Desktop Name and you should see what is able to be shared. Walk thru the steps above to install the printer on the laptop and have the intall cd in the laptop to install the drivers and you should be good to go. I hope this is understandable. If not feel free to email me at smichael@phoenixschool.net and I will see if I can clarify this for you. Happy networking!

Can't connect with my router

The laptop CAN NOT have the same IP address of the desktop because is another station.
The IP address is generated automatically from your wireless router, one different for each computer that you have on the network.

For that reason you have to renew the ip on your laptop.

I'm pretty certain that you can only have 1 host per computer/per name for a network. So, if you want to change the laptop as host you will have to setup a network under the settings. Create a network password along with the network name for that laptop. (Unidentified Network) is a correct network name. It's just that you probably didn't change it to a specific name that you wanted it to be in the box. after doing this, you should be able to go to the other computer's and try to log onto the network domain that you have created. after that in order to get approval to access the network domain you have to enter the encryption key which is the network password. you have to do this to all non hosted computers. after completion, you should be connected to that specific network.

Now you want you're desktop to be the host. Well, from above do the same steps for the desktop. But, instead of (in example) to lets say your laptops network name is (Home). Well, you would have to make the host name on the desktop to be (Home2). then set the encrption key. Then go to all non hosted computers including the laptop that you made the first network. because this is a new hosted network created by you're desktop and connect to that network and then supplying the encrption key to be able to access the network. and you should be good. Just my 2cents. although this may not work because you may have to have to routers to be able to create multiple networks but, like you mentioned earlier you have a wireless on you other laptop you can use the setup for that wireless to make another network. Hope this helps and good luck ;)

Start with the simplest answer first so make sure the laptop's WiFi is turned on. If you have set the router to provide a closed network your laptop will not see it automatically and you will need to enter the WiFi network settings in network setup. if you are using Windows click start, click control panel and click network, on the left hand sidebar you will see "Setup a Small or Home Office Network", follow the wizard and you should be able to get connected. If you are using Mac OS X click the Airport icon on your menu bar, click "other network" and enter the SSID, select the encryption type and enter the network key (password). Lastly make sure that if you have chosen to use an access control list you have entered and allowed your laptop's MAC address in the list before trying to connect.
