I have this same problem when I connect my WD Elements to my PC front panel. I have reviewed
similar problems but found one interesting, one that tells that on laptops with XP SP2, USB 2 devices tend to drain the battery. Try connecting your WD to the USB ports at the back of your CPU one-by-one and use shorter cable. This solved by problem, hope this would for you too.
