Question about Gateway MX8738 Notebook

1 Answer

Gateway MX8738 Laptop won't power on. The power adapter is putting out the correct voltage, but the computer is dead - no sign of life. This happened once before - repaired under warranty. This time I'm on my own. Any ideas? (wiggling the power plug in the jack doesn't do anything).

Sounds like your power jack may be faulty or bad connection to motherboard unfortunately. The only way to truly find out is by disassembling the laptop. You'll have to do this at your own risk of course, and test the terminals at the power jack to see if you are getting power through them, if you are, then the trouble is deeper in the motherboard. If you are not, then here is a good article on how to fix the power jack:

Good luck.

M series gateway laptop no power

Check the power adapter for the correct voltage (~18v,)
If it's putting out the correct voltage, your DC-in jack might be bad and needs to be replaced.

How to troubleshoot your laptop at start

When you plug in the power adapter and press on the power button, there is no signs of life at all. The laptop will not make usual noises, LEDs will not light up, the fan will not spin, the screen is blank and black, etc… In short, the laptop is dead. What you can do in this case?
1. Make sure the wall outlet is working and the laptop DC adapter is getting power from the outlet. Try another wall outlet.
2. Test the laptop DC power adapter, make sure the voltage output is correct. You can test the DC power adapter with a voltmeter.
3. Let’s say the DC adapter is fine and the adapter outputs correct voltage. In this case unplug the power adapter from the laptop, remove the battery, wait for 1-2 minutes, plug in the adapter and try turning on the laptop again.
OK, you tested the adapter and it’s bad. If you decide to replace the original DC adapter with a generic one, you’ll have to follow this rule:
The voltage output on your new adapter has to be exactly the same as on the original adapter. The amperage on the new adapter could be the same or higher.
If nothing helps and the laptop is still dead, apparently the motherboard is fried or there is a problem with the DC power jack. It’s possible the DC power jack is broken and the motherboard is not getting any power from the adapter. In this case you’ll have to disassemble the laptop and replace the power jack.

I have a problem with a Gateway MT6705 that will not power on. Voltage on adapter is good, voltage can be read from mother board but there is no sign of life. Am I missing something basic? I have done that...

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. Make sure the DC jack is not loose or broken. A loose DC jack will need to be re-soldered. A broken one will need to be replaced.
4. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
5. The power button could be bad.

6. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced

Gateway laptop battery ran down and now wont' start up with it plugged in

Take out the battery and put it back in. Plug in the charger and start your computer. This should fix it. It happens when the battery runs down too much.

Power cord is plugged in, but the computer won't turn on

That could be. If your battery is dead and the adapter won't charge it, you can't turn it on.
Test the adapter with a multi-meter to see if it is putting out the correct voltage which should be 18 volts, if I remember correctly.

Gateway MX8738 power adapter problem

Does the DC jack on the laptop wiggle or feel loose?

If that's the case then eventually the jack will go bad will have to be replaced. Most computer shops charger around 60-100 for the repair.

If it's the charger itself then just replace it with an ORIGINAL from eBay.

Hope this info helps and if you need more specifics just let me know.

Not likely; probably fried the motherboard's power supply.
Given the expense of purchasing/installing a new motherboard you may want to consider a new laptop.

Hello I have a gateway mx8738 laptop operating system not found

Is this happening when your using a DVD disc to watch movie? Then when it boots back up it trys to boot from your video DVD. It wouldn't do that if you take the DVD out before it boots. But, that is only is your using a DVD or cd. If not then you might want to change your video software. The computer is probably still down when it's booting up again and can't find OS. Hope this helps you!

Battery not chaging, light flashs 4 amber and 1 blue.

You have had a flat battery for a long time hence the cells tend to be dead. Make sure the power adapting is remitting the right voltage with the use of a multimeter set to dc voltage at 20V. Most power adapters are within the range of 13 and 19.5V, so 20V dc should be selected for a correct reading ok. Having comfirmed that to be ok, you should just power off your pc and have it connected to a power outlet for a least 2hours. If there is still no sign of battery life, then it should be changed as it might have exceeded its life span. Most of such batteries have an average life span of 5 years depending on use though. Good luck
