Question about Cameras
It sounds like you have hot installed the driver. You should have received a cd with the camera. If you do not have that, goto the manfturers site. They should have a free download for your excat model. You may also have to load/download quicktime or windows media player.
After being sure that your USB cable is fully connected on both sides, right click on the start button and click explore. You will see a tree that lists your desktop, drives, etc. You should see a major heading that looks like a drive, (G), (H), of similiar. It will either indicate camera, or device...., etc. Double click that. You should be offered to search for drivers. say yes to that.

Tips for a great answer:
Connect the camera to your computer by using the camera's USB cable.
Connecting a camera to a computer with a USB cable
Turn on the camera.
In the AutoPlay dialog box that appears, click Import pictures and videos using Windows.
(Optional) To tag the pictures, type a tag name in the Tag these pictures (optional) box.
By default, the folder name includes the date the pictures and videos are imported and the tag name.
A new window opens and shows the imported pictures and videos.
