Martin, Re mac Laptop & wireless prob.  Thanks for the reply but you miss the point, it is with the mac that the connectivity fails, XP connects wirelessly without trouble! Oh the shame of it, for the mac user where "everything just works" this situation is embarrassing. I'll suggest upgrading this neighbour's mac to Leopard to see if that helps.

Go to command prompt I.e type cmd in run option which is available in start menu,then a black color window will open ,type IPCONFIG and press enter,it will display IP address ,it should be anything but not 169.254.#.# ,if you are getting this IP address check with ur cable or the driver might not be installed .

If I understand you correctly you have an Intel based MAC, with the boot-camp boot manager, so you can choose to boot either from the native MAC OS or from Windows XP.

The system works fine from the MAC OS, but the (wired) ethernet does not work from XP.

1) When you boot into XP mode, the XP operating system is in
charge and the MAC OS is dormant.

2) Check the XP device manager to see if the ethernet NIC
(network device) is properly installed and if the device
drivers are functioning.

From Windows XP:

Right click My Computer ==> Properties => Hardware ==>
==> Device Manager ==> Network Adapters =>
==> Your network controller

Right click on your network controller ==> properties

Check the device status !!!

2) If the device is NOT working properly, you may need to
download and install a device driver for this card.

3) If the device IS working properly, you may need to run
the NETWORK SETUP WIZARD from the control panel:

START ==> Control Panel ==> Network Setup Wizard ==>
==> Next.

4) Assuming you are connecting to DSL with a login password,
use the: "My computer connect to the internet through a
modem" option.

If your DSL is always on, or if you use a local router to
connect to the DSL modem (the router does the work)

Then you choose the: "My computer connects to the
internet through another computer or a residential gateway"
option.

    I got it upside down.

I have a Dell dimension 350 pc with just a modem connection for a phone line. I just got cable installed which has the ethernet hookup. i would like to still use my 350 with win. 98 if i can. how can i...

Does your cable modem have wireless internet? If so, you can buy a Netgear wireless usb port adapter for about $20 and use that to connect wirelessly to the internet. Your pc has usb port connections - right? (Usb port looks like a rectangle)

If you don't want to use a wireless connection you can purchase a cable modem with a usb connection for about $65. You run the ethernet cable to the modem and then a usb cable from the modem to your pc.

If you have a serial cable connection on your pc (looks like a round circle with tiny metal pins in it) you can buy a gender changer and convert that to usb (in case you dont have a usb connection or need another one). You can buy one for about $11.

You can buy an I/O Gear bluetooth usb adapter for $13 and pick up the internet via bluetooth by putting it in your usb port but I'm unsure how well it would work with Win 98.

If you have another pc that has an ethernet connection you could use good old fashioned bi directional printer cable and network both computers together. You may need to upgrade to win xp for networking capabilities.

I have a Siemens 4200 ethernet/USB ADSL modem on a machine running Windows XP. If I switch to a new machine with Windows 7 64-bit, will I need a new driver for the modem?

If its connected via ethernet you may not need an updated driver of the modem but and updated driver of your LAN card. If its connected via USB then yup try the manufacturers website for the modem divers

Bought a new computer with vista instead of XP and cannot connect to internet via the ethernet line from my cable modem. what is the secret? Usually plugging it in is enough when I have moved or changed...

Yes! plugging it in on the Ethernet cable on the modem to the computer should get you online. If your not able to get online, you may want to check the following:

1. Make sure that the Ethernet adapter on the computer is enabled. If you can't find the Local Area Connection icon in your Network connections (control panel\network and sharing center), check if the network adapter is properly installed.

2. Some cable service providers require the MAC/Physical address of the Computer to get it online through the modem. If the old computer is working with the modem, you may want to contact your ISP and ask their assistance in getting you online using your new computer.

I am trying to install a cable modem with usb and ethernet connections on a windows xp computer.

Well there are 2 ways
via Ethernet
1.) connect the ethernet from the modem to the ethernet of the computer via the cable provided and thats should basically setup and give you an ip automatically
Via Usb
2.) install the drivers that came on a cd with the model
2.) follow the onscreen instructions and connect the modem via the usb cable when it tells you to
3.) when setup is complete it will create a connect icon for you, just run it to connect
