Question about Fantom Drives 120 GB Hard Drive

All of a sudden my computer dosent recognise the USB Drive ( PQI - U230 )

It used to work fine, but now my PC is not able to identify the USB Drive. !!
I already have some important files on it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    For the last year I have backed up my personal and corporate data to my Western Digital my book essential edition 500 GB Harddrive. My motherboard failed on my HP Laptop. This forced me to buy a new computer from Dell and restore my data. While I was recovering my data when my Western Digital HDD refused me access.Now my computer does not let me access it. I get an error mesage which tells me to format the drive. If I do this I will lose everything I own because I have forwarded all my information to this drive from past computers including all my family photos. There must be a better solution for this problem because I have read many stories with the same problem. I called western Digital tech support but they would not help me. They claimed my unit was out of warrentee. It was not and I faxed them the store receipt and waited two days for them to call me back as they said they would do.

    NO JOY, it is very unsettling to have your entire life wiped away. I backed up all my data like a good user but how would I know my backup would fall too.

At this point i would take the usb drive apart, you should see a regular hard drive in it. if so just set your jumper settings and insert it to your computer. if you still got problems then your drive has crashes on you. you can try at this point some hard drive recovery tools found across the net.
if the drive is too small to plug in then you need to get an adapter usually found at ebay. if this is a pen drive then i would take it out of the case then look for and solder the usb connector as this is the first bad spot to go. anyways, if its a hard drive and works in computer, i would check power supply goin to the use drive, if its good then i would contact the company that made it maybe they will replace the unit. or just buy another one. copy info back over to the new drive. or get a drive just like it and swap them out.

My problem and my solution
-Fantom Drives 200GB was working correct on desktop which runs Windows XP
-Connected it to a laptop which runs Vista and the drive became undecteable by both platforms. It showed up on Vista's device manager for a hot second and then vanished all together.
-Changed the USB cable and still no go
-Finally, I made the decision to void the warranty by opening it and connecting it directly to my CPU and there it all was. 170GB worth of data. Same as what scott201201 is suggesting above.
-Moral of this story...."Backup your "backup".

If you are running XP or vista, then go to your device mgr and be sure that the USB port is powered on and enabled. Hope this helps...accordianman

Plz check your usb drive is working(led will be glowing),if yes then plz scan your pc in safe mode with updated viruses definition and disabling system restore.

MY pqi 4gb travelling disk is not working actually it is not getting connect with PC.Any hardware problem?


if you already tried different computers, and checked if the USB port is a known good port, then it might be your USB flash drive thats having problems. Check if your flash drive has lifetime warranty thru PQi's website...you might be able to get that 1 replaced..

1> Click on start and then run or press( windows key+R) and type devmgmt.msc and then expand the item Mice and other pointing devices, right click on ps2 compatible mouse or the item for the mouse.
2> On the Power Management tab, change the power management settings.

Hi there, I have a MyBook essential edition 500GB and its not being recognised by my laptop when i plug it into the USB. What do i do? I've used it before and its worked fine


Try a friends computer. If that dosent work, check the ac adapter, replace is nessary. if that dosent work put the hdd in a nother enclosure, still not working, the hdd istelf will be broken, tae the drive to a data recovery centre

Usb devise not recognised


You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

or check if proper driver is installed..
