Take the pwerhead off your vac.
Face the beater bar upwards toward you.
Remove 4 Philips screws.
Remove the plastic shroud from the bottom of pwerhead.
Carefully remove one end of the beater bar, (the end opposite to the belt)
Remove the belt end.
Now depending on your model... you should be able to remove both ends of the bar.
usually there is thread or carpet fiber wrap around the bar.
You mention the 80,s,which also tell me they had a copper fitting where the axle of the beater bar meet. Trying to relace the end pieces may be a task and a half... So purchase the whole unit from the manufacturer.
Have fun vaccuming

When i set the floor setting to carpet, it makes a nasty rattling noise. doesn't do it on bare floor setting

Hi,

There is one major difference between the hard floor setting and the carpet setting - the brushbar doesn't spin on the hard floor setting. Hopefully this is a simple problem - the rattling noise suggests there may be something trapped behind the brush rollers. You can inspect this by removing the sole plate from the vacuum. Doing this may allow any trapped objects to fall out without need for any further inspection:

To remove the sole plate:

1. Lie the dyson on it's side so you can access the underside or sit on a chair, turn the vacuum upside down and hold it between your knees.
2. Using a coin or a large flat-bladed screwdriver undo the two yellow fasteners on either side of the "sole plate" which covers the brush rollers.
3. Pivot the back edge of the sole plate upwards and remove it

Any loose debris can now be easily removed, While the sole plate is removed, it is a good opportunity to inspect the brushes and remove anything else that may be stuck to it.

Replacing the sole plate is the exact reverse of the removal process. Before replacing the sole plate, ensure that the brush bar is correctly and fully inserted.

There are other possible reason for the rattling noise, but your description leads me to believe that this should cure the fault. Inspect the brushbar first and then post back if you need further assistance.

Need a new power head

your best bet would be to try Ebay or something like that. These units were discontinued late 1999/early 2000 and no parts are available for it.

my best suggestion in this case is to invest what you would spend on the powerhead into a newer cannister. Some of the newer units have better filtration and suction than the lightning cannister does.

Carpet function won't work.

You are going to have to get a screw driver and remove the bottom plate and the hoses. You are correct, there is a clog. You might be able to clear if you have a shop vac. Be prepared to remove all the connections in the dirt path to remove the hair ball.

Belt

Hi. This isn't a hard repair at all.... Unplug your vacuum. Turn the vacuum beater bar side up. Locate the catches or screws that hold the plate on that covers the beater bar. Remove the plate. The beater bar sits in sockets where it attaches to the vacuum, so remove carefully, making note how it comes out. This will make reassembly much easier. Place your new belt on the motor shaft, then onto the beater bar while you replace the beater bar back into the sockets. Test your work by revolving the beater bar a bit by hand. Reinstall the cover plate. That's it!

Dirt doesn't make it to cannister ...it used to have the spin around affect now it just sits there but some dirt is leaving floor....it is in the hose..I have cleaned ALL filters ...YUCK......help

You have a broken belt. Turn the vacuum over and remove cover plate. You will probably find a broken rubber belt. Buy a new belt for your vacuum. Remove the brush , install the new belt with the brush. Put cover plate back on. You are ready to go!

Debris getting stuck in vacuum hose

Check that the filters are completely clean. If there are clogged they would have to be washed and then dried to room temp (or a low temp tumble dryer, put the filters into a pillow case with a towel and install into the machine) Tip the bissell backwards to make sure the bottom bin is pushed and locked all the way in. Only when the two seals meet will you know that the bin has locked in properly. Unhook by prising the main hose at the back off to check for clogs as well as the main hose at the bottom and the main dust channel at the sole plate where the roller bar is. You may have to remove the bottom plate to check for any obstructions behind the brush bar.
I have the Easy vac myself. Its not an Easy machine to maintain when it gets clogged!

No suction, again.

There is a blockage somewhere and its most probably jammed between the main dust channel between the beater bar and the bottom hose inspection. Remove the sole plate to see if anything is still stuck, check the beater bar as well and see if there is anything obstructing at the main hose removal point.
