I am assuming that you are referring to your Windows login password... if not please give more details.

There are many password recovery utilities on the net, using dictionary based cracking algorithms. Some of the more expensive ones also use an inverse lookup database for the
password hash-file entries.

One of the best was a free or nearly free program made by a company called SysInternals run by Mark Russinovich. Unfortunately Mark Russinovich was hired by Microsoft, and his new website, now called winternals no longer offers this utility. You can probably still find it on the NET if you google it.

Do you have another account on this computer, such as the main administrator account. IF you do you can log into it, and reset/change your own password. If your computer comes up with a bunch of login icons, and the master administrator account is not listed, press Ctr-Alt-Del twice in a row at the login screen, and then enter the user ID and password for the main administrator account:

User name: Administrator
Password : ..........

If your computer came with windows pre-installed,
than the vendor should know the administrator account

Please note that although the administrator account CANNOT
be deleted from windows, it can be RENAMED in the local
policy settings, and the vendor of your computer may have
done this.

Also you can plug your hard drive into another computer, and treat is as a data drive. You can then recover all your important files, providing you did not deliberately encrypt them using the
NTFS encryption utility. (Encryption is OFF by default)

Once you recover all your files, put the hard-drive back,
and re-install windows. This is guaranteed to work but
it can take a long time, depending on how many application
programs you have to re-install if you do re-install Windows.

Hope this helps, Martin

Next time write down your password in a safe place, despite
of what common wisdom (or Microsoft) tells you. Given the
blinding speed of modern computers, and the parallel power of
internet computing NO password is safe from the experienced hacker or government agency, anyway. Any password that
can be remembered by humans, is definitely not safe against
a brute force (BFI) attack.

Create very long and random password, full of mixed case
letters, numbers and weird characters, and then write it down
and keep copies in many safe places. Never use the same password for two unrelated purposes.

    Password Genius should work.
The problem is you have to buy it,
    before you try it.

    But $20 is very reasonable.

    It also performs other functions,
such as recovering obfuscated product keys
    and serials, etc.

The success rate of a password cracker (i.e. how long it takes)
depends on the complexity of the password ant its length,

so the name of your pet or girlfriend is found much faster
than a long cryptic password full of junk characters.

Windows uses a many to one hashing algorithm to reduce
the password's complexity, before it stores it in encrypted form.
(this is dumb and very weak)

The encryption uses a one way algorithm, which is not
    (easily) reversible.

When you login, the password you type is hashed (compacted)
and encrypted in the same way, only the two encrypted versions are compared, the password is never available in the clear.

The hash/encryption algorithm is public, and the location of the
passwords is known, it is the non-reversibility of this algorithm
that protects the password from prying eyes.

Password crackers start by using a dictionary of popular passwords (names, birthdays, cigarette brands etc...) and
feed these through the hashing algorithm in search of a match.

If this fails, then they feed-in the entire English dictionary,
and other popular languages, until a match is found.

If that fails, then they mutate the words, rotate characters,
insert digits and punctuation, substitute sound alikes, etc.

All of the above efforts are "astronomically" faster than
    brute force.

Finally, if intelligence fails, the crackers do resort to the BFI
(Brute force and Ignorance) attack, by trying all possible
binary combinations at astronomic speeds, taking into
account any simplification offered by Microsoft's imperfect
    hashing algorithm.

Ultra expensive cracking software ($700) provides rapid,
industrial quality password recovery, by having a multi-CD
(precalculated) reverse lookup database for all possible hashcodes. Remember that there are fewer hash codes than
possible passwords, so the program will recover a password that works, not necessarily the original password you used.

Hope this gives you some insight

Numbers Come Up Instead of Letters

This a very common issue faced by a technical support like me. What happens is that when you type any random letters the output will numbers from 1-0 in exact order. For example, you type "qwertyuiop" on the address bar, what comes up is "1234567890" and if you continue typing, it will start from 1 again in numeric sequence until you're done. Not until lately. I have just discovered how to resolve it. First, I thought it was a problem with OS - Windows Update incompatibility, so I reinstalled my OS and set the computer back to factory state but as windows updates were installed same issue happened. By the way this issue only happens on browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc.. On my laptop, I have a software called ID VAULT. I uninstalled the ID VAULT thinking that I have no use of that and also it made me think that the problem can be caused by either a browser or a security software which conflicts with windows updates. Aside from the ID VAULT I also uninstalled my Google Chrome Browser and just used Mozilla Firefox. So guys if ever you encounter an issue like this, look for either software (ID VAULT or Google Chrome) and try typing an email or anything at all on your browser.

***Note: if you only have a Google Chrome browser make sure you install a different browser first before uninstalling Google Chrome. Also, this trick doesn't work for laptops whose NumLock is enabled.

Foget password

First, give this FREEWARE a try:

NOTE: Only effective on MS Excel/Word UP-TO version 2003 (NOT 2007).

There are several for-purchase trialware/shareware products available, but I know this one works:

"Word Password Recovery" - $29.99 -

  1. Open the document, then "Save As..." in RTF (Rich Text Format).
  2. Open the new RTF file, then "Save As..." a Word format document.
Good luck, and pease post back to let me know how things worked out (especially to report whether the FREEWARE worked or not).
