One of your convergence IC's have probably gone bad. This is a common problem after 5 years or so on that model (happened to my SD643HD5). You have a few choices:
1) Fix it yourself by replacing the IC's, by soldering new ones in. See this website for details:
http://home.earthlink.net/~oleg.filippov/ConvergenceFix.htm
That website also shows pictures of what the problem looks like.
2) Fix it yourself by buying a whole new convergence board assembly from Pioneer, part number AWV1892, for about $290.
3) Take it to a service/repair shop, and pay $300-$600.

You have a problem with the vertical drive section. Probably a bad electrolytic capacitor. See my tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4916595-fix_vertical_drive_problem for help with this problem.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Pioneer PRO 510HD - 53"

Boards can run 250 - 400.00 on average. You may be better off just repairing the board parts for around 65.00

See below

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The picture on my TV has started to "shadow" or double on the sides of the screen and seems to be slowly working its way across the entire screen. The color is also getting goofy. My set is 7 years old.

Started with a very distorted and jumpy picture. after 20 mins adjust to a constant but suttle rippling action top quarter of the screen. now the entire unit is dead will not power on.

If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com
