Hello,

the antenna is the cause if the gps is not having signal or reception.

Check the antenna is broken or well fixed. If not, you will have to replace the antenna.

Take care.

Unable to acquire satellites

GPS devices do not work inside buildings or in tunnels. Even outside, high-rise buildings or trees can interfere with GPS signal reception. Car navigation systems do not work through the roof of the car, they need to be mounted to the windshield of the car with free view to the sky, or use an external antenna.
Some cars have metal coating on the windows for sunlight blocking or privacy protection. Such coatings may also block the GPS satellite signals.

Another problem: unlike TV satellites, GPS satellites do not have a fixed position relative to the ground, they move all the time. Your GPS device needs to locate and tune in on four satellites minimum first to start working for you. The scanning of the hemisphere to locate satellites takes several minutes (up to ten on Tomtom devices).

Tomtom devices use a device stored file with precomputed satellite positions to speed up the process to a few seconds. Since the file holds data only for about two weeks, the package "QuickGPSFix" needs to be updated at least once in a fortnight using the Tomtom HOME software, or it will fall back to the slow scanning procedure.

If you do have a different brand of GPS device, please add a comment to this post and I'll try to give further advice.

Losess reception frequently for long periods of time. It was given to us as a Christmas present and is still under warrenty.

It is absolutely necessary to frequently update the quick GPS fix information for better functioning of the GPS. To update Quick GPS fix you need to connect the GPS to the computer. Once GPS is connected it will ask you whether you would like to install the TomTom home software. say yes to that suggestion and follow the tips on the screen. Once the installation is completed, your gps will be automatically updated wait till this process is complete. This should solve your reception problems. For more information click on the link below:

No gps signal

First of all it's suppose to be a 1 year warranty, at least it is here in Australia.

My GPS stopped working recently, after trying to install updates, I found that by resetting the factory settings it started working again. This may help, but mine was not knocked though, so you may have damaged the antenna.

My tomtom one gps can't get signal

When was the last time you updated the QuickFix of your TomTom? It helps your GPS to find the satellites.
Please, do the following:
1) Install "TomTom Home" software in your computer from www.tomtom.com
2) Start TomTom Home in your computer
3) Plug in the GPS dock to your computer's USB port and place the GPS on the dock. The green light on the bottom right of the GPS should turn ON to indicate that the GPS is getting power from the dock and charging
4) Start your GPS while being in the dock. If the GPS asks "do you want to connect to computer" answer "YES"
5) The TomTom Home software will detect the GPS and check if there are any updates for it. Then you'll be offered updates to install. Some are free, some are not. Be sure you choose to update "QuickFix".
Please, report back if you need further assistance

No gps signal with tomtom

Solution for No GPS Signal

To pinpoint your location, you need to get signals from at least 4 satellites. If you receive signals from less than 4 satellites or the signals are not strong enough, the Driving View stays gray and one of the following messages is shown in the bottom right corner of the Driving View:
  • Waiting for a valid GPS signal
  • The GPS signal was lost sec ago
Note: In previous versions of the TomTom application the message may vary.
If you see any of these messages, try the following:

Finding a GPS signal
In the following cases it can take up to 5 minutes to find your current position:
  • You use your TomTom device for the first time.
  • You haven't used your TomTom device for a longer time.
  • Your TomTom device has been relocated without using it (e.g. after traveling by plane or train).
If it takes longer than 5 minutes, make sure that you are in an open place without tall buildings or trees around you.
Once your TomTom device has located your current position, the Driving View is shown in full color and shows your position on the map.
Tip: Most TomTom devices can use QuickGPSfix™ to locate your current position faster.

Flight mode
On devices with built-in GPRS connectivity, flight mode also disables your device’s GPS reception.
To switch flight mode off, tap Flight mode in the preferences menu and then select Restore connections.

Clear View
Your TomTom device must be outdoors to locate your current position.
Try repositioning your device in your car; ideally, try to position it at the lowest possible point directly on the windscreen.
Some vehicles have a heat reflective shield embedded in the windscreen, which may prevent your device from locating your current position. If this is the case in your vehicle, use the TomTom External Antenna Kit (available as an accessory).
Tip: As a reference, place your device outside your parked car to see if it can find your current position.

Reset your device
Reset your TomTom device. Click here to learn how to reset your device.

Install the latest application
We recommend always having the latest version of our application installed on your device.

Waiting for valid gps signal

The GPS needs at least 3 satellite signals to operate. You are probably in a bad reception area. Move around a bit and try again until you see a signal array of 3 or more!

Reception

I'm not sure that would help at all. An external antenna is useful if you are inside a vehicle to get around the signal being blocked if your gps is inside but from the sounds of your description, you are being blocked by the buildings. What you need is line of sight to the satellites so the gps can triangulate your location. The more satellites it can see, the better. If it cannot locate at least 3, it will not work.

No GPS signal?

I had this problem (waiting for a valid GPS signal). I did a factory reset and the unit started working again (yes, I lost all my settings, but what good is a GPS unit that just sits there waiting for a valid GPS signal?). To do a factory reset, go to menu -> change preferences -> Reset factory settings.
