I have a motorola w220 which I got from a friend who had gone to another
network. I put my sim card in it and it works fine except when I try to redial a
previously dialled number or look at missed calls using the green dial key,
the phone just asks for "Phone Lock Code" If I go into menus and select the
"Recent Calls" icon, the same thing happens.
I love this phone and they are no longer for sale here. The unlock code that the phone wants has been installed
by the old owner, he used the last 4 digits of his cell no but cannot remember
what they are.

I think you need to insert the original Sim card that was used when you set the code. The code is stored in the card. Once you have done that and unlocked the phone, the phone will work with all other Sim cards. Just remember if you set the code you have to use the card that was in use at the time.
You can take the phone to a shop and they might be able to clear it. They have special software for that purpose, that isn't readily available to all.
