It sounds as though a sheet of paper or an envelope bunched up and has jammed inside. Until that is removed from the feed roller, you will continue to hear the 'grinding' sound, and won't be able to print anything. Remove the cover from the backside of the machine, then locate and remove the obstruction. If you don't have any such obstruction then you have a mechanical defect which is not user repairable.
You may be right about the worn gear as a factor but I used to have a LJ 4 and whenever it indicated a paper jam it was always right. In some cases, the jam was a tiny scrap of paper deep inside. It took a flashlight and examination of every bit of the paper path to find it
This is a common problem with HP inkjet printers. If you hear a fast ticking/grinding noise when it tries to feed paper, then it is likely that there is a broken gear on the paper advance roller. If there is no noise, remove the turn around guide on the back of the printer, you will see a black paper guide. On the underside of the guide, slightly left of center, there is a paper input sensor and actuator. Make sure the actuator is in place and not binding or missing. If the actuator is in good operating condition and there is no paper present, then the main logic board has most likely failed.
The grinding noise is the clashing of gears. The fuser is composed of 2 rollers, a metal or ceramic with a heater inside (bulb) and a silicon roller to apply pressure. The 'hot' roller is geared and the silicon roller can be geared or free floating. There is at least 1 paper sensor in the the fuser to let the unit know whether paper is there and there when it should or should not be. Sometimes, the sensor gets slightly dislodged and can actually cause a jam. If you are hearing a gear clash, the paper is being pushed through the machine and instead of being pushed through the fuser, it stops because the fuser rollers are not turning. The rest of the machine keeps pushing, crinkling the paper. If there is crinkling, then gears that drive the fuser need to be checked. It is this gear cluster and/or the fuser that need to be replaced.
Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
Also open the back cover of the printer if this model has one.
Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it away from light/ sun light to avoid damaging it.
If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though. Do this step especially if the jam message comes up repeatedly without any obvious paper jam, there may be a small tear of paper inside.
Ones the printer is free of paper Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.

alternative : Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.
If the HP LaserJet series printer is experiencing a grinding or odd noise when printing or on power-up, open the printer and remove the print cartridge. Close the printer door. If the noise does not recur with the print cartridge removed, replace the print cartridge. If the noise persists, this may indicate a hardware failure.
