Caution, the sony License agreement which must be accepted in order to use this player, states, in part, that: "The SOFTWARE contains features which may allow SONY and/or third parties to collect data from, control and/or monitor computers and devices running or interacting with the SOFTWARE. You hereby agree that such activities may occur."
Essentially, SONY is asking you to agree that they, or other unnamed third parties, have the right to collect unspecified data from your computer, and control your computer if they wish to do so. ...

It means the Digital Rights to the song have expired.
From Sony's site:
"This issue may occur if the license for the track you are trying to play has expired on the device. If you currently subscribe to a music subscription service, connect the device and sign into the account to refresh your license to allow for playback. You may need to do this once during each billing period to listen to the subscription music you have transferred. If you are no longer a subscriber to the service where you downloaded the file from, you can delete the song from your portable player to prevent this error from occurring each time you try to play the song back."
The license on the songs has expired, and that's the problem with DRM-protected WMA's. You will need to renew the license through the music service from which you downloaded the songs. If your subscription has lapsed, you will need to renew it. Then, you'll have to delete the songs on your Walkman, and reload them once you have updated the license.
If you only download and transfer files in mp3 format you will never have this problem, and you can keep the songs forever.
That is the problem with services that give you DRM-protected WMA's - as soon as the subscription lapses, the song cannot be played on your mp3 player anymore. The only way around the problem is to either: a) renew your subscription, or b) get a music service that gives you DRM-free songs, preferably a service that gives you the songs in mp3 format.
Make sure the device is fully charged.
Make sure the songs are in the correct format - Mp3 is best; iTunes/AAC will not work; check the bit rate of the songs to make sure they are at acceptable levels.
Also, make sure you are using the Media Manager to convert files.
Formatting the player, in this case, might have been a bad idea, b/c it is possible that it erased key system files - I do not see where Sony has the original firmware/software for this particular product on their website, so it is going to be difficult to reload it if that is the case.

because the user is trying to download a song format that the player does not

music file contains a license or copyright (especially with WMA or AAC file
formats).Each Mp3 player only

Windows Plays For Sure logo – which is actually an ironic misnomer).DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and

DRM licenses are created equal – there are licenses with “play rights,” burn

rights mean that you can only play the song on your PC – it will play fine on

download from SpiralFrog is good to go – however, you need to sync your
portable devices every month as well in order to update the licenses on
the songs you’ve transferred so they’ll play as well.
I went to www.sony.com and was able to find the solution. If your songs were downloaded from services similar to Napster then you will have to log back into the service to refresh the licenses on the songs. If you no longer are subscribing to the service then you will need to delete the songs from your player. If you need further information you can find it on the Sony website.
