There are several things you can try. First reset the printer - with the printer on, unplug the power cord from the unit. Then unplug the cord from the outlet. Wait at least 15 seconds and plug the power cord back into the outlet and then into the printer. Press the Power button if the unit doesn't come on on its own. If the message is resolved, stop.

Next clean the print head. Remove the cartridges as you usually would. Lift the handle on the carriage and lift the printhead straight up. Clean with lint free cloths (several - coffee filters will work) and distilled or bottled water. Lightly dampen a cloth with water. Wipe the electrical contacts from bottom to top. Do not go past the edge between the contacts and the nozzles. Repeat until ink free. Use a new lightly dampened cloth and wipe the edge between the contacts and the nozzles in a right to left pattern (contacts forward). Again wipe until no ink remains. Finally wipe the ramps (new cloth again) heading away from the nozzles (downhill) until no ink remains. Take a dry cloth (or several) and dry each of these areas.

Take another lightly dampened cloth and clean the electrical contacts inside the printer. Use a top to bottom motion until no ink remains. Then dry the area. Finally reinsert the printhead (latch up) then lower the latch. Reinstall the ink cartridges and close the cartridge door.

If this doesn't work, you can order a new printhead but that doesn't always work. Unfortunately, printheads are not returnable once installed. I hope this helps.

HP Photosmart C6280 "Ink System Failure"

The ink failure error is caused by air in the ink feed tubes in your printer. This happens when the ink in your cartridge runs out and the printer sucks up air instead of ink. This is a very common problem with this series of printer. We have a step by step repair solution for this error posted on our web site at: click on the printer repair pages and follow the links to your printer series.

I hope this helps, If so pleae rate our solution.

Ink System Failure on a HP Photosmart C6280 All-in One

This is likely a cartridge problem except if the carriage is not moving at all. If you still have some of the used cartridges you can used them to trouble shoot by elimination ok. Or contact a nearby technician who has the cartriges to use them for trouble shooting. I strongly believe the one of the print carts is the culprit. Good luck
