T43P LCD keeps going dark

LCD goes dark intermittently making the machine practiacally useless. In Linux I can go to another screen and coming back to X I get the lcd working for a while, then it goes away again and I have to do the ctl+alt+F# dance all over again. In Windows when it goes away I have to reboot!

I think you are having problem with backlight. The concept of laptop is that if there is problem with backlight then it will try to shut it down(shut the light down). If you restart your laptop ,that mean you turn the light on again...after that if its blink or something wrong then again your system will try to shut it down to prevent other part get spoil.

What you have to do is..
1.problem from backlight replace backlight
2.problem from inverter replace inverter
3.problem from motherchip...repair motherboard.

There is issue I have run into on alot of IBM t40 series with the screens going dim, I don't know what its called but the board that has all the LED's on the screen is easily replaced and usually fixes the problem, take out the 3 screws on the front of the screen, and one of the small ones on the right side, you should be able to left the bezel (carefully its stuck to the screen) and you will see the board with the LED's take out the screw for it and unplug the white 2 pronged cable and the the small ribbon cable attached to back, get another one (I suggest off a broken screen) and replace.

The light on my Compaq CQ50-142US keeps going out intermittently. I can see the display, but there is no light behind it. After a second or two, the light comes back on. How do I fix it?

Actually it's a lot easier to replace the LCD Screen than to fool with the backlight.

If you can barely see the images on the screen then the problem more then likely is the LCD Inverter. It sits under the lcd screen and is covered by the strip that goes around the lcd screen. Remove the rubber bumpers that are on the strip around the lcd screen to expose the screws and remove them. Look down at the very bottom and you will see the Inverter which has a cable coming from the lcd screen and one from the Video on the motherboard. Remove both cables and put them back. Sometimes all they need is to be reseated and the image will appear. If not, you can purchase a new lcd inverter on eBay for less than $10.

My screen keeps going dark although I can see there are images on the screen . I have to move the lid back and forth until it lights up.

This indicates that the wire bundle running through the hinge has been compromised. Some wire has frayed apart and is making intermittent contact with itself or the lid movement is causing the wire bundle to pull on one of the video connectors.

In order to fix this problem, you will need to remove the laptop's front hinge cover & check the bundle of wires connecting the motherboard to the LCD screen. If this bundle of wires is damaged, then you will have to get it replaced.

Screen goes very dark when tilted all the way back; comes on when tilted forward. Blinks off and on at the halfway point. Can this be resolved? Out of warranty.

After booting my screen goes dark

Goes dark or just stays dark ? if stays dark then it is the GPU causing problems as it has got too hot at some point, possibly due to lack of ventilation underneath. What sometimes works for me is to turn the machine on and flip it over and rest it on say a tea towel, but have the screen overhang the edge of table so it doesnt damaged it. Then, you need to cover vents and let the machine heat up for say around 10 mins. After this time, turn machine off and back on again, and you will find the screen will come back on. You should then be able to use machine as normal, but keep all vents clear. Some folk might think this is barmy, but trust me it works on most, HP, Compaq, Dells etc.

Lcd screen not working properly

you need do following steps:
1) to make sure there is messages showing on the dark LCD screen. even nothing backlighs.
2) to make sure the inverter is defective, change other parts (same model) to test it,reference: http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_8.htm
3) if still dark with new inverter, you have to change CCFL lamp at back of LCD panel. reference from:
http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_8.htm
4) also you could change a LCD panel if the CCFL lamp damage which you can not do fix.
hope help you fix it. any question please ask me.

Screen resolution always get back to a different value

There is most likely a utility ( ati util ) that runs in the background so set the resolution through there utility and that should solve the issue where as if you set it through windows display properties it will continue to do the above.

Try checking the inverter, if that is intermittent, it could short the system and cause the symptoms you are describing.

It sounds like a LCD backlight problem. Bring it to an authorized repair shop.

The back light for the lcd display off

I would bet on a failed FL Inverter board which is the board that runs the backlight.

However, if your LCD is RED before it goes dark your backlight has failed. Given the age of the machine you will probably have to get parts from ebay.

If you can tell me the part number of the machine (on the serial number sticker) - I can look up what inverter or LCD you need - there are several different screens the 6000 series uses that are NOT cross compatible.
