Washer fills up with water but does not start to wash/agitate

if you don't hear the motor running you have a bad lid switch,if you do hear the motor but no agitation you have a broken motor coupling.
most likely you have a broken lid switch, close the lid, then open it around 6 inches, close it and open it a few times,as you do this if you don't hear a clicking sound the switch is bad, part number 8054980 and it's around 25 dollars.

watch this video, when you click on it look down on the left side it will say replacing new style, click on it and it will show you your model.it will show you how to make sure it's the lid switch but if you don't hear any clicking when you open and close the lid the switch is bad, also if the lid is pushed in from putting the laundry basket on top of it open the lid and wack the center of the lid to pop it back up,i've done this before when the lid is dented in and this fixes the problem, the arm that's connected to the lid doesn't hit the switch correctly with the lid dented in but usually the switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

It will fill up with water but nothing else

check the lid switch, set the timer on spin, push it in so it will run,get a screw driver or anything that will fit into the hole on the right side, that's the lid switch, the strike on the lid hits it when you close the lid,if the switch is broke it kills the power to the machine,it's a safety so the machine won't run with the lid open, when you push down on the switch you should hear a click and it should spin and drain,if you don't hear a clicking sound the switch is broke,or you can close the lid, lift it up a few inches and close it down,do this a few times, when it closes and opens if you don't hear a clicking sound the switch is bad.part number 3949247 and it's around 45 dollars.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFsvLiuTniU copy and paste,it will show you how to get at the switch.let me know what you find so if someone else has the same problem they will read what you found, thanks

Whirlpool High Capacity washer, start cycle , it fills with water then no agitation, and no spinning.

next time send the model number, open the lid, look on the right side and there should be a hole in the top, that's the lid switch,it's used so the washer won't run if the lid is open for safety reasons, set it to spin and with a screw driver push down on the plastic piece in the hole,if nothing happens push in and release,do this a few times,if you don't hear a clicking sound when you push up and down the switch is bad or close the lid and open it an inch, close it and open it a few times,no clicking sound the switch is bad.

Machine will not start

THE MOST COMMON THING WITH THIS WASHER IS THE LID SWITCH. THERE IS A TEMPORARY & EASY WAY TO FIGURE THIS OUT. FIRST OPEN THE LID. LOOK AT THE BOTTOM JUST A LITTLE RIGHT OF CENTER WHEN THE LID IS UP. DO YOU SEE A LITTLE WHITE PLASTIC PIECE? THIS IS THE STRIKE FOR THE SWITCH. IF IT IS MISSING YOU NEED THAT. IF IT IS THERE LOWER YOUR LID SLOWLY UNTIL CLOSED ALL THE WAY. LISTEN TO HEAR A CLICK WHEN DOING THIS. A CLICK WILL DETERMINE IF THE SWITCH IS BEING ACTIVATED AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT IT IS GOOD. IF YOU HEAR THIS CLICK AND THE WASHER WILL NOT START THEN YOU MAY HAVE A TIMER ISSUE. IF YOU HAVE NO CLICK THEN CONTINUE. UNPLUG WASHER. REMOVE THE 3 SCREWS AT THE TOP OF THE CONSOLE. WITH ONE HAD ON THE CONSOLE TOP CENTER STARTED TO PULL FOREWARD. PUSH BACK AT THE BOTTOM CENTER WITH THE OTHER HAND. THE LID SWITCH HAS 2 RED, 2YELLOW, 2 WHITE AND 1 BLACK WIRE TO IT. UNPLUG THIS. ON THE BACK LEFT CORNER OF THE LID SWITCH THERE IS A LOCK TAB. WITH ON HAND LIFT THE WASHER LID UP 3 INCHES OR SO. WITH THE OTHER HAND LIFT THE LOCK TAB ON THE LID SWITCH WHILE PULLING FOREWARD ON IT. PUL LID SWITCH OUT AND PUSH THE PLUNGER IN. DOES IT CLICK? IF YES THEN FIND A VERY TINY SCREW TO SCREW IN THAT END OF THE PLUNGER. YOU ONLY NEED TO EXTEND THAT PLUNG LESS THAN 1/8 TO 3/32NDS OF AN INCH. YOU CAN ALSO GLU SOMETHING TO IT. REASSEMBLE ONCE THIS IS DONE.

must be a whirpool or kenmore shut lid try pressing down on left rear corner be sure lid hinge screws are tight then raise lid on left corner under top out of sight you will feel small lever push toward back of washer slightly and then try again also if lid center has popped down push up slightly in center till lid pops back up sen it happen once where washer would not spin

look over the top of the control panel look straight down you see 2 phillips head screws on either side youll need to remove, the console will flip back giving you access to the switch..just for curiosity its not "clicking" when you close the lid therefore it fills and stops, doesnt spin or drain???? try this first.open the lid all the way, the left side hinge acts as the plunger for the switch.. feel under there open and close lid a little to help find the metal hinge. after finding the hinge place a 1/4 nutdriver(doesnt matter the size just needs a hollow shaft.) over the protruding portion of the hinge. still under the top but right there! when its on push the driver back(in essence bending hte armature back slightly). itll flex a bit as you push the hinge the door will push back(you got the right spot then). after you crank it back a bit try closing the lid now. did you hear it click??? your golden!!!!!!! no need to change.. reason for telling you this is for the most part the switch doesnt go bad but the lid /hinge isnt bent enough to make contact, and over time of swinging top into the fully opened position it actually bends to far forward to make contact. i have a box full of switched that other techs ordered and weren't needed. not saying they dont go bad ive seen that, but try this first might get lucky!!!!

Will not drain or spin

The symptoms you are describing are usually caused by a bad lid switch. The washer will fill, agitate, but when it starts to go to the rinse cycle, the washer stops and will not advance any further. The lid switch is located on the right hand side of the wash tub opening on most top loader machines. Check to see if it has come loose. There are two screws holding it in place. Additionally, there should be a small plunger on the lid that pushes down on the switch to activate it when the lid is closed. Make sure this plunger is intact. If your washer does not have a lid switch mounted on the right hand side of the lid, it will be located on the left hand side in the rear under the console. A simple test is to open and close the lid and listen for a "clicking" noise. If you can't hear the contacts closing, your switch is probably bad. In the case of the rear mounted lid switch, there is an arm on the lid that activates the contacts. Sometimes the arm becomes bent and will not close the switch contacts. Generally, the repair is simple and a lid switch usually runs about $35. If you post back with your model number I can get an exact part number for you and give you step-by-step instructions on how to replace it. Let me know. I hope this helps you.
