The 5 blinks on a Panasonic projection television set is usually a problem in the power supply to the high voltage circuits.

You should be able to get a local service center to repair this at your house for between $350.00 - $450.00.

If you want to repair this set yourself, I have some instructions below that will be a help to you.
***** NOTE : You can get electrocuted and be hurt or cause death . You have been warned, be very careful when repairing any electronics. ****

If you are handy with a DVM you can check a couple of things with the power off and the set unplugged.

Check the Horizontal Output Transistor (HOT) Q551 for shorts. You may have to remove it from the circuit to test it completely. Also, check the Damper Diode and the horizontal drive transformer T501, this transformer can have ring cracks around the legs and cause the HOT to short.

The next step would be to check to see if you have 140 VDC on the collector of the HOT. If you don’t then you will need to start trouble shooting to find out where the 140 VDC was lost.

This can be a difficult repair, so I would suggest that you call a reputable service center to come and check out your set.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.

I disagree with info provided by another expert.
5 times led blink shows problem with IC4511 (main video signal processor) on DG Board of Panasonic PT-56WX53 tv.
You need to have service manual copy in hand to fix this issue because of circuit complicity.
Thanks.

JVC HD-56FN97 when turned on blue light is solid, red ligt blinks a few times and goes out. My picture is very dark despite adjustments I make in the menu, any help or feed back apreciated.

The set does use a lamp for a light source and average life is 2 years or 2000 hours---many lamps before they actually fail get to be darker.

I have a panasonic 56 that the red light stays solid red for five seconds, then blinks five times when turned on. No pic, no sound. It worked fine last night.

5 blinks usually means a short on the 140 volt line coming out of the set's power supply.

Most likely cause for this to look at first is Q551---the horizontal output transistor. The part is on a heat sink usually on the right side as you look from the back of the set. If you have a ohmmeter, it has three leads--there should not be a reading from the middle lead to either of the other two leads---a short.

I do not access to the schematic for this set as the site is down---but it may also in front of the transistor several brown capacitors----Q551 is the location of the transistor----if you also find a brown capacitor location c509 (usually marked on it something like 0474) what may have happened is the cap shorted and got the transistor.

The cap can be looked and sometimes you will see a physical crack in it---it can also fail by either shorting or going open like a light bulb that has burned out.

If your set has that cap and it is cracked you most likely are going to find the Q551 shorted.

There are a few ways to troubleshoot this depending on how much skill you have.

The Power Light is Red

yeah, should stay red when unit is turned off, indicating there's power but it's doing nothing.

Per user manual:
Solid red - power off (standby mode)
blinking red - power off (now cooling)
blinking green - power on (preparing to light lamp)
solid green - power on
