Question about PC Desktops
HERE is the listing on LG's web site for your DVD ROM drive.
W/ respect to firmware, the rule of thumb is to leave it as it is unless there's a need to upgrade it (in an effort to correct an issue or for compatibility w/ another device or software, for instance)
My recomendation, is to, 1st, get the optical (DVD ROM drive) device installed and try it out. See how it goes.
HERE and HERE are a couple of tutorials on installing optical drives on PCWorld and CNET. They're both a bit dated but if your DVD drive connects via the ATA/EIDE interface, the "rules" are essentially the same.
The one difference is, on most modern PCs now, you can set both of your optical drives (that are on your secondary IDE channel, for instance) to CS (cable select) and use a high density (80 as opposed to 40-wire) IDE ribbon cable (instead of having to jumper one as optical drive as master and the other as slave). The master/salve configuration will work just fine, however in any case. For more information regarding Cable Select and IDE cabling, please, visit THIS web site.
