Hi! I have a sony vaio PCG-K23. When I turn it on the screen appear black with some spots of light. I have to turned the computer off hours and sometimes a day or 2 to get it work. Also when the screen work and I had it on for a long time, if I had to restart the computer for any reason the screen does the same; black with light spots. I plugged an external monitor and continue working. How can I know if its the screen panel, the inverter; or the video card, someone told me. Please need help as soon as posible.
Hi there, I have the same laptop and issue as you do. Replacing the invertor will not fix the problem. If you see a solid black screen or the screen is very dim then the invertor would need replacing. Based on your pictures it looks to be the lcd screen that needs to be looked at. Bring it to a technician as the screen may not need to be replaced but just re-calibrated.
It is definitely the screen or the inverter. Usually the screen and inverter come as one piece. I would check with the manufacturer. Unfortunately for you, the LCD is one of the most expensive parts to replace on a laptop.
Just the simple fact of you mentioning that it works fine with an external monitor tells me that its not the video card. If it was the video card, you would see the exact same thing happening on your external monitor as well.
Hope this helps!
It sounds like things are a bit more complicated than they seem. I dont truly understand why it would work fine in standby but not from a cold start. Usually if you are having problems with a video card or onboard video memory, you will actually get the exact opposite result.
I should have asked you some more specific questions. Are these spots and not vertical/horizontal lines? Are the spots the size of say, a pixel or are they a large area? If you move or jar the screen or laptop does it change?
thank you for the pictures. it looks like a bad inverter to me. Many times when an inverter is failing, you will get strange results. I would suggest taking it in to a computer repair shop or consider sending your description and these pictures in to a site such as one of these below to have it verified.

If you do not want to or do not have the ability to remove the inverter yourself, this will at least give you a verifiable solution so that you can find a way to get it repaired.
Being unsure of what exact part the problem lies upon, I would just replace the whole LCD assembly. It usually comes with the inverter.

If I put the computer on stand by instead of shut down when it turns back on don't have any problem, it does it only when I shut it down or restart it after using it for a while...any idea why is that???
Here are some pictures. I can move the screen, even closeit down and still the same, the only way I can get it to work is shut it down and leave it hours or a day or two. When finally I can get it to work when finished I just put the computer in stand by and when I turned it on again the screen is fine.
This picture is when the blue log in screen of windows xp appears.
I started my computer this morning and the screen turned on ok but I noticed some vertical lines that appears and disappeared.
