Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

I have a Proline Combi Chef CT88. There is a piece of silver covered card on the right hand side which apparently covers the magnetron. Yesterday, this card disintegrated and there was some smoke. Proline is Comet's own brand but the say they don't supply spares for their appliances which I find utterly pathetic. What is the purpose of this piece of card and is it something I could produce myself, perhaps ordinary card sprayed with silver paint? Thank you.

SOURCE: Microwave partially heats

Assuming your power line voltage is right, bearing the whole thread in mind, I'm sure you have a bad magnetron.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

If you follow the safety & disassembly info, this is not a difficult job for a do-it-yourselfer.

SOURCE: microwave ovens

The Magnetron has failed, causing the waveguide to become damaged. If the waveguide is damaged/burned the microwave can not be repaired and should be replaced.

SOURCE: Paint damaged in side microwave oven

1) How is the cavity damaged? Is it just peeling paint, or is it rust? If it's rust then the microwave could be dangerous.

2) The antenna cap usually has a small hole in the centre, but if there are any other holes in it the magnetron itself could be damaged, and holes caused by the magnetrin arcing.

SOURCE: PAINT DAMAGE INSIDE MICROWAVE CAVITY.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If it's allowed to stay that way, it can arc, which will greatly accelerate the charring & rusting processes.

How do you install light bulb on mcw1611 magic chef??

I'm not finding a Magic Chef model MCW1611, but I do see they have models like MCM1611B and MCM1611ST. Maybe it's one of those?

Either way, I would suggest checking your owner's manual to see if it mentions bulb changes. If for some reason you don't have yours, you should be able to download it or a similar one here. https://mcappliance.com/manuals

If the manual doesn't cover bulb changes, then you would need to remove the outer cover to get to the bulb, usually located on the right side near the magnetron.

Feel free to contact me for further info.

Silver card has come off on the inside right,is the microwave safe to use .its a prestige model dse20

this is the waveguide cover it covers the anoide of the magnetron, its not really a good idea to use the unit without it as it does two things it allows the microwaves to pass through it but stop anything from getting onto the magnetron if you know of anywhere that repairs microwaves they may if you take your old cover to they might be able to cut a replacement of if its just fallen out you should be able to slot it back in the corners just sit in the slots in the side panel hope this helps

My MCD1311ST Majic Chef Microwave has a paper that is made of some sort of reflective type material on the side of the right hand wall of the microwave. It is a part of the microwave. It has been causing...

I have not seen a microwave wall made up of such material but similar was commonly used as a roof to the earlier microwaves that employed a stirrer to deflect the microwave radiation in order to reduce hotspots in the food. Turntables were found to be effective enough so the stirrer has been largely consigned to history. Many microwaves so equipped often had the cardboard discarded without apparent ill effect.

The exit of the waveguide is often covered by a similar material but these are mostly only a few inches square...

These examples used a material transparent to microwaves and wasn't reflective in any way. That yours is reflective indicates it could be intended to bounce the microwave energy around in an attempt to reduce food hotspots. It should be available as a spare part if the oven isn't obsolete.

The panel on the right side wall has a hole in it and sparks shoot through the hole when I attempt to cook

That would be the waveguide cover.

If it gets food particles or grease on it, it will spark.

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the waveguide cover gets damaged, it will have to be replaced, since it provides critical protection for the magnetron.

I have a GE JES1290 series convection microwave. On the inside wall (right side), there is a 2.5" x 5" piece of heavy paper (silver in color) that covers a porthole. During operation, it was this piece of...

That's the waveguide cover whichcovers the opening where the microwaves enter the cooking cavity. What happens is food spatters (especially grease and sugar) on the cover absorb the microwaves and cause the spots to heat, so the cover gets burned. The oven will actually operate without the cover, but it's needed to protect the antenna of the magnetron tube (the microwave source). If food gets back there and burns, it's usually doomsday for the tube and time for a new oven.

The replacement is GE part number WB06X10591. It's available from these folks. I do a lot of business with them, so I can recommend them. Here's another source that has it at a lower price, but I don't know anything about the company. You can also try calling appliance parts places or repair shops and give them the number; they may already have the part in stock.

Inside side panel has flames coming off of it

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

How to change the fan

The fan is located on the right side behind the key panel. I know this because I removed it while replacing the magnetron the other day. It is easier to get to than the magnetron. You take the black cover off. Then there is a silver cover with 3 screws covering the magnetron. Remove it and remove the front grill and one screw to the keypad, then you can reach the fan thru there.

i hope this helps!

How to change magnetron

open the housing cover by removing the screws at the back and at the sides ( if they have).

remove the wires that is connected to the magnetron( it is safer to discharge first the capacitor by shorting out the leads of the capacitor. a spark might occur ( be carefull) use an insulated screw driver and short the two leads.

after you are sure that there is no more stored power at the capacitor, then proceed in removing the magnetron.

you can remove the sensor at the top, then the 4 screws that holds it in place. be carefull as you pull it off. it has a metal tip at the end of the magnetron.

if you notice the mica cover of the wave guide being dark and almost burnt, do replace it.

check for scratches of the metal near the magnetron. re-paint all metals that are visible. you have to cover all metals from the magnetron to prevent arching.

tnx 4 using fixya,
