Salt system is ok but really only makes it possible to not have to physicaly ad liquid or tablet chlorine
still need stabilizer, algaecide,ph up or down and so on
Actuall just one more thing to go wrong and to maintain

First thing to do about chemicals for above ground sand filters

the values I set for my customers pools is as follows:

ph 7.4
alkalinity 100 ppm
calcium 200 ppm
stabilizer 50 ppm (saltwater pool 25 ppm)

These values will provide balanced swimming pool water

Should i use chemicals with my saltwater system

yes. the saltwater is merely a substitute form of chlorine. you must still balance the water as you would with any pool. you will need to adjust ph, alk, calcium, stabilizer. you also need to check the chlorine level on a regular basis as these systems are either on or off. they dont regulate the amount of chlorine in the water

Can I use the same filter system for both saltwater and freshwater tanks?

Both mechanical and biological filtration systems are not ideal for filtering saltwater tanks. The only problem is that using a chemical filter on its own will not be enough. There are 3 varieties of saltwater filtration systems to select from. They are protein skimming, live rock and live sand.

We have a Krystal Clear Saltwater System Model CS8110. We are first time pool buyers. We set up the pool last week and despite several "boosts" the chlorine level is very low. The pool store...

You should always follow the instructions on the manual .. I have a 18X33X4 oval and had to start with over 350 lbs of salt and ran the pump without the chlorinator for 24 hours to properly disolve the salt. Then, I started with 12 hrs pump cycle with 10 hrs of chlorination in between the 12 hrs. Keep checking the chlorine level and adjust time from there. Currently at temperatures of 85 to 100, I run the system at 10 hrs pump with 8 hrs chrlorinator and water is Crystal Clear... In the 2 years with the intex system, I have not added any chemicals to my pool. I once had an issue when the water level went low while I was on vacation, when I came back, the chrolinator had turned off due to low flow and my pool water was green.. As soon as I re-started the cycle, a few days later, Crystal Clear again... NO CHEMICALS OR SHOCK added.... Hope this helps....

Our salt water pool has a low ph and very low alkaline levels...Do we need to add more salt?

I would take your water to local pool store and get water test to get correct chemicals to add. They will test and see if more salt is needed

I'm thinking about getting a above ground pool. Can I use the pump that comes with the pool to for salt water? And what is the routine for salt water maintance and start up?

What kind of filter comes with the pool?
If your using an intex pump don't waste your time. They do not pump enough.
If you are getting a sand filter then by all means get a salt system
Start up is simple ad x amount pounds of salt determined by the volume in gallons of your pool then filter only for 24 hours then you can start generating chlorine.
Just remember just because you use a salt system does not mean you do not need chemicals you will still need to use a stabilizer and keep track of ph also a good non foaming algaecide and crystal clear solution should be used

here is a manual for salt set up click on the top pump and look at around pg 15 this will give you salt to gallons ratio for pounds of salt needed
