For that you need to fix bad sectors on harddrive.
You can fix it with disk checkig tools or formating.
Formating is best first take all data backup of harddrive to computer then format it then it will work fine.
And for disk checking right click on drive icon then click on tools then disk check enable recover errors then it will work fine.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

thanks for your quick answer, but the hdd. will not spin long enough for the pc. to see it, also i forgot to mention that i needed to test another 12 volt dc adapter from something else, so i used my ex. hdd. to test it but just for a few seconds, and with the original trekstor adapter being an unusual shape i am now thinking i could of blown something, thanks, rocket.

  • Check your harddrive with another power adapter and another power outlet.
if it show power on and still if it not recognized in computer then follow below .
First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
    then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
If your harddrive still not recognized and still it is not show power on then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.
If it will not work with another power adapter and power outlet then you need to repair harddrive.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

thanks again for your reply, i have tried another 12 volt supply, also i have tested is the original trekstor adapter on my multimeter and its ok., also when i removed the hdd. from its plastic shell i found that the 12 volt feed plugged in to a small circuit board that plugged in to the hdd. which is a sata; is it possible that this circuit board is faulty, also is it a normal thing that when a hdd. loses power it makes a clunking noise inside as it slows to a halt within 3 seconds.
can the data be recovered if the hdd. will not spin, thanks, rocket.

  • Yes Data is still possible to recover for that take it to harddrive service center first they start harddrive mechanism then they can recover data with recovery software.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Your brief description actually makes me think that the drive itself has been damaged. I have discovered both internal and external hard drives will shut down like this when there are problems with it. Bumps or abrupt movement while the dirve is spinning could be enough to cause damage, and external drives are prone to more of this type of activity. You mention the drive is vibrating, and I would assume that it is more vibration than you would normally notice? Would it by chance happen to be a type of clunking sound? Or do you think it is just the normal vibration of spin up and spin down?

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

I wish you all the best.

My external hd blue light just flashes and i dont have access.

Do you connect via USB or firewire? Can you / have you tried another connection method?
Does it sound like the disk is spinning normally, or is it making a heap of clunking noises or not spinning?
The most common problem (assuming it has power, which it obviously does because it has a blue light), is the USB cable. Do you have another that you can try?
Let us know how you go with that and we'll continue...

Non detectable external self powered 40 GB USB Portable Hard Disk

Id recommend trying these following steps: Go to: Start - Control panel - Administrative tools - Computer management - Disk management. Here you should be able to see the 40GB hard drive. Depending on your situation you may need to create a partition, to do so right click the unallocated space and choose to create a partition. The default settings will be fine. Good luck!
