Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

2 Answers

We bought a ps3 and as we understood a person can play ps2 games on a ps3. According to the ps3 box you can only play certain games. My question is this: is there a list of games that are compatable or is there an easy way to tell if games are compatable?

As for the ps3 that wont play ps2 games. the 20 and 40 gb only play ps1, ps3, dvds, and blueray dvds

the 60gb and 80gb play ps1, ps2, ps3, dvds, blueray dvds and the 80gb does so much more.

80gb is your best bet. i have never heard of any 80gb not playing some ps2 games. it plays them all.

there is a 120gb and 160gb being released by sony soon

I live in South Africa and bought a PS3 Baseball game. It works in my PS2 but not in the PS3, because of the zone code. What is the correct zone code

I assume you bought a PS2 game that works on your PS2 system but not on your PS3 system since a PS3 game will never work on a PS2.

Since not all PS3 systems can play PS2 games, you need to first check the model number of your PS3 system. If you look at the back of your PS3, there should be a serial number somewhere that starts with "CECH", followed by one more letter and a couple numbers (e.g. "CECHC02"). Unless the model number starts with "CECHA", "CECHB", "CECHC", or "CECHE", you won't be able to play PS2 games on your PS3.

If your PS3 can play PS2 games, then you need to make sure that the region of the PS2 game matches the region of your PS3. The region of the PS2 game can be found in the upper-right corner of the front of the box the game came in. The four regions are: "NTSC U/C", "NTSC J", "NTSC C", and "PAL".

Once you know the model number of the PS3 and the region of the PS2 game, you can tell if the PS2 game should work on the PS3. Use the following chart to determine if your game and system are compatible:

Last two digits of your PS3 model number: Playable PS2 game region
00: NTSC J
01: NTSC U/C
02: PAL
03: PAL
04: PAL
05: NTSC J
06: NTSC J
07: NTSC J
08: PAL
09: NTSC C
11: NTSC U/C
12: NTSC J

I thought playstations are all formated to play any made of equal or lesser p.s. value such as p.s.3. should play p.s.2. games

I believe you're asking about backwards compatibility. While I agree a PS3 should be able to play PS2 games, it's sadly not always the case. While they all can play PS1 games, not every PS3 can play PS2 games. PS2 compatibility depends on the model.

Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has slowly been phased out. The original PS3's had hardware emulation (quite literally there is a PS2 inside of your PS3). The later revisions had software emulation only (PS3 processor pretends to be the PS2 processor), and then none at all. No slim PS3 has backwards compatibility.

Hardware emulation:
20 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHB01
60 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHA01

Software emulation:
80 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHE01

In my personal experience, there's no real difference between software and hardware emulation in terms of actual game play. Software emulation has a few hang-ups on some older games, but overall it works pretty well. And it's infinitely better than not having any ability to play PS2 games at all.

PS3 WONT PLAY PS2 GAMES

davehilto172

Only certain models of PS3's will play PS2 games. If you let me know the model number on your system I can look to see if yours will play PS2 games.

If you have played PS2 games before on this system let me know this as well.

I bought my son a ps3 with 120mb memory for xmas after being told that it will also play ps2 games. Now we can't get the ps2 games to work. is a download needed ? or was I lied to by sales person ?

Well sorry to tell you this but the 120 gig ps3 does not have any backwards capabilities whatsoever. There is no downloads to make ps2 games work. Either the sales person bold faced lied to you, or they had no clue what they were selling. Sony only came out with 2 systems that have backwards capabilities, the 60 and 80 gig systems, although they are limited and the 80 requires a download. Sorry for the headache, if I were you I would give that sales person a good piece of my mind.

Can you play PS2 games on a PS3?

If you bought the original PS3 when it first came out and purchased the expensive one with the larger hard drive, it will be able to play *some* PS2 games. If you bought the cheaper one with the smaller hard drive or purchased your PS3 once the prices started dropping, it will have no capabilities of playing PS2 games, as Sony has decided to not continue making the system semi-backwards-compatible.

My PS3 can't only PS2 games!!! 80028F17

Not all PS3s are able to play PS2 games - they started removing that functionality when they came out with the 60GB model. So if you have a relatively new PS3 (A year old or so), that's likely the reason.

PS2 OR PS2 SLIM

ps2 can play dvds but xbox needs a store bought xbox dvd remote to play dvds
the ps2 slim and the ps2 normal have a lot in common so thwere is not much difference, but the slim has a fliptop lid and the fat ps2 has a open and shut slide drive. If I were you I would get the slim because it is the only one you can get brand new nowadays. The xbox may have halo 1 and 2 but sometimes there are freezes on certain xboxes.

PS2 games on PS3 console

Unfortunately some PS2 games will not run at their best on the newer PS3's. Make sure your PS3 has the latest updates installed, as some of the more recent updates have fixed some known issues with PS2 games. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until they release an update that fixes your problem, if they ever do.

Error 80028f17

Error 80028f17 is a boot error and there is nothing you can really do about it, the disk is corrupted or burned (illegal copy) of the game. If it is legit, go back to the store and ask for another copy as it doesn't work.
