It would appear the the shock not only damaged the USB connector but also the drive. You could try Hirens.BootCD and carry out a RAW recovery and you may be lucky and recover some of your lost data. If not then it will be gone forever as you have damaged the plates inside the hard drive itself

The WD my book is a SATA drive not an IDE which means the change from Master to Slave is automatically done by the BIOS and not the drive unlike the earlier IDE drives which had the option to swich fro Master to slave. This was also carried through the CD/DVD drives of that range

I wouldn't play with it as software based recovery can cause more damage. http://techrxgb.com offers free estimates and shipping. Send it to us and we can have a look (if the data is important to you). Dont' try to recover data to the same drive; it can cause data loss and damage.

Hi, I believe you need to change this drive to Slave; to do this, there are a row of small pins at the back of the drive, two of them covered by a small plug. Remove this plug and reinstate in the position specified for a slave device. You should then be able to find this drive under i.e windows explorer.
Hope this helps
