Hello,
First of all, the programs made for windows can't be run on Ubuntu because Linux based operating system don't execute *.exe files.
Messenger programs like Pidgin, skype are already added in the repository of Ubuntu. You can select from the software management menu and install. Besides, you can also download the sources (tar balls) of various other messengers written fir Linux distributions, compile them and install. You need just to search on Google for all available messengers for Ubuntu.
It is advisable that you download a Debian package of the software because it is just like Windows .exe file to install it. Just, a click.
Let me know if you need any other help regarding installation of softwares on Linux.
We are always available for your help.

Regards.

Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

How can I download and open to install Yahoo messenger please?

empathy for ubuntu works with most messenger formats including yahoo. empathy is installed along with linux on ubuntu 10.10 so may already be installed on your system. ubuntu 10.10 is free and I guess you must now be out of your 60 day included support.
you might want to check out the ubuntu forums on the correct syntax to download and install programs in ubuntu
http://ubuntuforums.org/
the valusoft offering appears to be ubuntu 8.04 which is way out of date as we're on 10.10 which is the latest stable release and includes a software installer.

How do i download msn on my ubuntu laptop without it being rejected by the computer when i try and install it .?

MSN of whatever sort you are trying to install is a Windows program while Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. You could use the Ubuntu add programs applet to install Wine and see if you can get it to work but the long and short of it is that Microsoft has no reason to make something for their OS run on Linux.

If you're referring to MSN messenger there are a number of chat programs that are compatible with this like Pidgen. In any case here is no easy way to get a Windows program to work perfectly on Linux.

How to install yahoo messenger in ubuntu linux 9.4

There is no official release of Yahoo Messenger for Linux anymore. However, you can chat with your friends who use Yahoo Messenger by using a Linux chat client such as Empathy or Pidgin, both of which are available in the Ubuntu software center.

Instal problem on ubuntu linux

Thanks for choosing fixya.com

WIndows based apps will not run in linux without the use of an emulator. Even then most of the messenger apps do not work properly.

Your best bet is to use an alternative messenger that will allow you to still talk to all of your friends. In ubuntu if you goto the "Add new software" section and search for "instant messenger" you should be able to download several IM program that will work with yahoo, msn, icq, and all the rest.

Ubuntu also offers a few extensive community forum where a lot of these questions have already been answered for your convenience.

Hope this helps you, feel free to ask further if needed.
