I have had this camera for two years and never had a problem. Now when I switch it on the screen shows the message, " Memory card is write protected" and the camera will not function.

On the memory card is a slide lock that locks the card from being accidentally written to or erased. embossed with a lock that is unlocked/locked.
Somehow this slide lock has been moved to the write protection mode/locked. Could have happened if you removed the memory card lately.
Remove the memory card and slide the lock to unlock reinstall the card and that should cure your problem.

How to remove write protection from sony memory stick pro duo

There should be a small plastic catch on the side of the card which allows you to write protect the memory stick pro duo. It should have an image of a lock or say locked next to it, if it is locked you won't be able to write to it. Slide it to the unlocked position using a fingernail or a paperclip.

SD = Secure Digital - which means there is a small (on one side) slidable lock - if locked, you cannot access the card. Check that as probably needs sliding to free the card for use.

Remove write protection

On the left side of the memory card find the word lock. There is a small slide switch you need to push up. This will remove the write protect. Some computers with built in card readers may insist the card is locked when it isn't. The work around for this is get an external usb card reader. you can use it to get data off it, format it and add data to it that way

Why wont my p80 allow me to format.

Your memory card is probably write-protected or if not it is busted. To verify if your memory card is locked you can easily remove it from your digital camera, and check for a small lever and set it to 'unlock'.
If this doesnt solve your problem, your memory card is probably corrupted/busted/defective.

Remove write protection from micro-sd card

  1. Remove the Sandisk SD card from your portable electronic device. Ensure that the SD card can be safely ejected before removing.
  2. Locate the write protect lock. The write protect lock should be on the side opposite the cut-off corner of the SD Card.
  3. Disengage the write protect lock. To do this, gently slide the small switch upward, toward the top of the SD Card. The card should now have write protection disabled.
jQuery('.article ol .image').each(function(i,e){ var $this = jQuery(this); $this.find('img').error(function(){ jQuery(this).remove(); $this.remove(); }); });

Memory card is locked

There should be a small sliding switch on the corner of the memory card. Look for a lock/unlock symbol and move it to unlock. That should take care of it.
