Question about Microsoft Remote Control for Windows Media Center 2005 Remote Control

2 Answers

Gateway GM5632E with integrated IR Receiver shows red indicator light whenever a Gateway media center remote button is pressed, but there is no other reaction from the OS --- the remote has zero effect on the media center, even though media center software otherwise seems to work just fine.

    (1) it's running on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with 3GB RAM
    (2) there is NO USB port or hub involved --- the problem's with an integrated IR Receiver, that is, the IR hardware is actually within the desktop internals
    (3) the red IR Receiver indicator light blinks every single time a button on the Gateway remote is pressed
BUT there is absolutely no response from Windows Media Center software

    (4) Also, the Gateway Remote model (8015954R Gateway Media Center Remote Control For Windows Vista) is the exact model intended to work with my media center desktop pc (Gateway GM5632E).

Hi:
Have you tried rebooting the computer, my computer sometimes have the same problem, rebooting sometimes helps solve this problem, if after rebooting the unit still does not resond try disconnecting the reciever from the USB port and reconnecting it again to see if windows is reconignizing it. Also check the drivers and make sure they are loaded.

the back of my desktop PC looks like this:
    http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/100958...

are you saying that the problem is that I need an
IR Receiver Cable in order for the remote to work properly?

Because I do NOT have an IR Receiver Cable --- I have just assumed that since I have seen a red indicator light respond each time a button on the Gateway remote control is pressed, that no additional hardware or cables were necessary...was this assumption incorrect?

I can help you fix your Gateway GM5632 IR Receiver Media Center PC remote control problem.

To troubleshoot your Media Center PC remote control problem, start with:

  1. unplug your Media Center IR receiver
  2. wait a couple minutes
  3. plug your Media Center IR receiver back in

Also try plugging the Media Center IR receiver to a different USB port (directly into the PC while troubleshooting at least, not into a USB hub).

The next most common issue is a problem with the remote itself:
  1. Remove the batteries from the remote the next time you walk away from the computer.
  2. Wait at least 30 minutes to pass.
  3. Replace batteries and test remote.

The third tack is:
  1. Remove the device driver for your remote from the Control Panel Device Manager.
  2. Unplug the USB cable and reboot.
  3. After the PC has quieted down from rebooting, plug the Media Center IR receiver USB cable back in.

Check the Task Manager and confirm ehtray.exe process/program is running. This controls remote commands. It most likely is, but if it is not, you may need to consider Media Center reloading.

I hope that helps.

it's an INTEGRATED IR Receiver, so its within the desktop internals, and not simply something where I can simply plug and unplug it from a USB port or hub.

  • chicagomike1 Jul 20, 2010

also, forgot to mention the OS is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit running 3GB RAM, if that's relevan...
the Windows Media Center software itself seems to work fine except for completely ignoring all inputs from the Gateway remote control, despite the fact that this remote is the exact model intended for this media center desktop.
    Thanks.

Will a 3.4 IR remote work in place of a 3.1 IR remote

It should work, provided has setup codes for your device. Check whether there is setup codes for the device do you want to programme with it. You can get this information from the code list of the remote control; you have purchased. If there is no code found, you can just search for a code.
  1. Manually turn on the device (TV, VCR, etc.) to be controlled.
  2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
  3. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks once, then stays on.
  4. Press the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly (up to 300 times) until the device to be controlled changes channel. The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
  5. Press and release MUTE to install the code. The indicator light goes off.
Most users will want to store VCR codes under the VCR button, Cable codes under CBL, etc. If you want to store a VCR code under CBL, etc., first follow the procedure for Direct Code Entry and press CBL in step 2 of Direct Code Entry, then enter ANY VCR code in step 3 of Direct Code Entry. Then follow the steps above for Code Search.

HP TSGH-IR02 Remote Control how to install

This document pertains to HP Media Center computers with Windows XP, Media Center Edition.Use this document when the remote control does not work correctly with the Media Center software.Troubleshooting the remote controlUse the following items to troubleshoot when the remote control does not respond or when the remote control does not work properly. For example, when a key is pressed the selection moves all the way to the top or bottom of a list, or moves a selection many different places instead of the item you were trying to select. Before attempting these steps, make sure that PC has been updated with all of the latest Windows updates. Many updates for Media Center, like Update Rollup 1 for eHome Infrared Receiver, can be downloaded easily through the Windows Update software Tool.
Make sure that the batteries for the remote control are installed correctly and charged.Make sure that the front of the remote sensor is unobstructed, within a 45-degree range, and is less than 26 feet (8 meters) away. Disconnect all devices that use a USB connection except to the receiver, keyboard, and mouse. Restart the PC, and then try the remote again. If a pressed button repeats itself (sticks), unplug the IR receiver from its USB connection, wait one minute, and plug in the IR receiver. If the pressed buttons continue to repeat, alter the lighting conditions in the room or move the location of the IR receiver. Other remotes and HP Media Center PCs within range can also cause this issue.Try pressing the Enter key on the remote after changing a channel. If the remote control works when using the media center software, but does not work when changing the television channels, re-configure the Media Center software settings for the cable set-top box or satellite receiver
Point the remote control towards the IR receiver and press a button. A faint red light should appear on the IR receiver. If the light appears, then the problem is probably in the software that is using the remote control (most likely the configuration of the Media Center software). Close the software, restart the computer, and then re-open the software to solve this issue.

Troubleshooting the IR receiverThe IR receiver is the small device that receives the signals sent by the remote control. Use the following steps to test and reset the IR receiver.Disconnect the IR receiver from its USB port on the computer, maximize the Media Center window if it is open, and then reconnect the IR receiver. Test again.Point the remote control towards the IR receiver and press a button. A faint red light should appear on the IR receiver. If the light appears, then the problem is probably in the software that is using the IR receiver (most likely the Media Center software). Close the software, restart the computer, and then re-open the software to solve this issue.Click Start , right-click My Computer , and then select Properties .Click the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.Click the plus sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If the eHome Infrared Receiver is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers, Windows is properly detecting the IR receiver. If eHome Infrared Receiver is not in the list, or there is an exclamation mark or a question mark on the device, perform the following until eHome Infrared Receiver appears correct in Device manager:Unplug the end of the USB cable on the IR receiver from the computer and plug it into the same USB port.Plug the end of the USB cable on the IR receiver into the front USB port on the computer.Disconnect all other USB devices, leave the IR receiver plugged in, and then restart the computer. Plug in other USB devices after the IR receiver shows up in device manager.Figure 1: IR receiver listing in Device Manager

How to program remote to dish? 4.4 IR/UHF PRO

Your question is not clear as to whether you want to program the remote to your TV or the DISH receiver. Here are steps for both if this has not been resolved already!

DISH RECEIVER::
1. Go to the room where the receiver is located. With the remote for THAT room press menu twice. (This will be the remote with the Green 1 on the bottom.)
2. Press and release the SAT button on the top left of the remote
3. Press and release the black and red record button 3 times
4. Look that the number next to remote address (secondary Remote address) has changed.
5. If not, start again.

TV::
1. Hold down the Clear TV button until all lights at the top of the remote light up
2. Press the red TV POWER button
3. Press and release the up arrow on the remote about once a second until the tv turns off.
4. When it turns off, press the # (Pound) button
5. Try powering the tv on/off, and try the volume. If one or more of these functions do not work, start over at step 1 again.

How do i program my remote

Hello;

Without knowing the codes for the specific brand names and models of your devices, this is how you program the Zenith MBR3447 for your TV, VCR, DVD Player, CD Player or Audio Receiver:

TV

1. Push the "Power" button on the TV to turn it on.
2. Press and hold the "PRG" button in the upper left corner of the remote. Release when the indicator light, located in the top center of the remote control, comes on.
3. Push the "TV" mode key located at the top of the remote.
4. Enter 0 -- 0 -- 0 on the remote's number pad, then press the "Enter" button.
5. Aim the remote control in the direction of the TV's IR sensor and push the "Power" button. Pause a second. If the TV fails to shut off, push the "Power" button again. Repeat until the TV does shut off. Each time the "Power" button is pressed the Zenith MBR3447 tries using a different TV device code from its code library to turn the TV off. Therefore, when the TV finally does shut off it's an indication that the remote is temporarily programmed with the correct device code to control the brand of TV you're using.
6. Press "Enter" to save the current code.

VCR

1. Push the "Power" button on the VCR to turn it on.
2. Press and hold the "PRG" button in the upper left corner of the remote. Release when the indicator light, located in the top center of the remote control, comes on.
3. Push the "VCR" mode key located at the top of the remote.
4. Enter 0 -- 0 -- 0 on the remote's number pad, then press the "Enter" button.
5. Aim the remote control in the direction of the VCR's IR sensor and push the "Power" button. Pause a second. If the VCR fails to shut off, push the "Power" button again. Repeat until the VCR does shut off. Then press "Enter."

DVD Player, CD Player or Audio Receiver

1. Push the "Power" button on the device your programming the remote to control to manually turn it on.
2. Press and hold the "PRG" button in the upper left corner of the remote. Release when the indicator light, located in the top center of the remote control, comes on.
3. Push the "AUX" mode key located at the top of the remote.
4. Enter 0 -- 0 -- 0 on the remote's number pad, then press the "Enter" button.
5. Aim the remote control in the direction of the device's IR sensor and push the "Power" button. Pause a second. If the device fails to shut off, push the "Power" button again. Repeat until the device does shut off. Then press "Enter."

Can't change the channels

Whenever a remote is not working to change channels thefirst thing to check is the batteries. Even if some buttons on the remote areworking, it is possible that low batteries are the cause of not being able tochange the channel. Once the remote has fresh batteries, you'll want to makesure that the remote is in the correct mode. This can be done simply bypressing the 'SAT' button and it should light up. The next thing to do isre-address the remote to the receiver. First, press the 'system info' button onthe receiver (or access system info through the menu). Once the system infoscreen is showing on the TV press the 'SAT' button once and release then pressthe record button. The remote should then be working with the receiver.

Volume changes automatically

Just a wild guess.

Does this receiver have line-of-sight with windows? Some other Infra-Red source in or out of your home may be affecting it. Try covering the IR 'eye' on the receiver to see if it stops happening.

I have an IR on my Media Center PC and the l.e.d. on it will light up whenever it receives a command, no matter what remote I use. Of course, it doesn't actually do anything unless I use its remote. Occasionally, it will blink even when I'm not using any remotes, so clearly it is seeing IR from somewhere.
