Question about Canon EOS 20Da Digital Camera

Canon 20D err 99 and shutter going off continuously

Until a couple of days ago I have had no problem with my 20D. I am using a new 28-200 Canon Lens for over a month again no problem. A couple of days ago it started giving an err99 message. I cleaned the contacts between the lens no fix. Now whenever I put the battery in the camera the shutter continues to go off regardless if the camera is switched on or not. Occasionally it shows a "busy" message but does nothing. I am travelling in Peru and very annoyed because unable to take pictures! All suggestions gratefully received there are no camera shops where I am. I thought buying a new battery might help?

Cheers

Its not the battery

its the exposure of the shutter speed of the camera

it might need to be set manually. set it to 2.8 or 4.5 speed

i had the same problem when i bought my sigma 20mm-80mm lens.

the lens wasnt talking to the camera properly, it didnt know what it was aying about exposure speed rate.

put the camera in AV mode and set the speed rate.

the lens might be compatible with your camera even though it is a canon, or it could be defective

return and replace

Canon 20D. Says "Err

Error 99 is a result of an electronic communication problem normally between the lens and the camera body.

Use a red pencil eraser to "polish" the contacts even if they look clean do it again.
Take care to keep dirt out of the camera and lens bodies.

Another thing is often times the camera firmware needs to be updated to move on from this.

Another thing is the CF cards? The 20D was in an era where pretty well the larges CF card was a 2gig,I use several 1gig however if you have updated your cards to say an 8gig the firmware just can't handle the card.

Okay moving on clean the lens and body, update firmware, make sure the CF card isn't beyond the camera capabilities and last if all that stuff didn't work the it's possible the actual sensor is really dirty and needs cleaning.

The worst case scenario is that the shutter has failed. The Canon 20D is only good for 60,000 actuation's.

Hope this give you a few options

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI 400D Displays Err 99. Problem with CF card. Replaced with brand new card-still same err 99 camera is totally charges, acts dead, keep flashing Err CF, I try to format, it...

Hi,

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Err 99 what is the propulam

Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....
Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thank you for using Fixya!

If two cameras are doing it, I would suggest the contacts on your lens are dirty.

Try the following diagnosis steps for solving ERR 99 issues : -

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Canon EOS 400D SLR - Err 99

Try going into the menu and turning off the lock for shooting without a lens. Then try firing it without a lens to see if it works. Very often a lens problem can cause the Err 99 message.

Also, check to make sure the pop-up flash is not stuck down. That could also cause it.

Unless you have used your camera a LOT, it shouldn't be a bad shutter. They usually only quit after many years of use. I think Canon quotes 125,000 shots as the normal life of a shutter in a digital SLR.

My Canon is displaying - Err 99 what should I do?

A common cause of Err 99 on the Digital Rebels that have some age on them is shutter failure. There is a switch called CN2 in the shutter that fractures and causes either bad flash sync or shutter failure-or both. The repair is to replace the shutter. Sometimes the CN2 switch can be repaired but we find at our shop it's better to replace the shutter with a new one. That way, with a new shutter, you will get years more of good service from the camera.

There are other causes for Err 99. Check the electrical contacts on the rear mount of the lens and the coresponding contacts in the lower portion of the mirror box in the camera body. Make sure they are clean and not distorted or bent.

There are more but these two are, by far, the most common.

Err 99

This probably isn't it, but just to be sure... Make sure you have the latest firmware loaded. I was getting constant Err99's with my 10D and a new Lexar 40x card until I loaded the latest firmware, even though the firmware notes mentioned nothing about addressing CF card issues. Now everything is fine.

Error 99

I get error 99 sometimes on my 20 D but it?s usually to do with a lens that is attached. Sigma lens have been known to cause error's. If it's not that or dirty contact on the lens then it could be a more serious problem. I would at least check it out with a canon dealer/repair centre.
