The backlight in your screen is out. You can have the screen replaced and your problem should be resolved. If you are confident enough, you can buy the screen and install it yourself.

Your LCD panel needs to be replaced more than likely. There are plenty of youtube videos if you are a DIYer, otherwise take it to your local computer shop and they should be able to fix it up within a day or two for 50-100 dollars plus the cost of the part. Good luck... you can find all your parts on ebay if you decide to go DIY

Laptop toshiba satellite p200 bw5 screen goes dark as if darkness/brightness was adjusted - but not Thanks

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs a Backlight to help illuminate the screen.

Power for the Backlight is produced by an Inverter. An Inverter also provides power for the LCD screen.
It reduces voltage for the Backlight, and increases Voltage for the LCD screen, from the laptop's power.

Most of the time a dark LCD screen can be attributed directly to a bad Inverter. (Around 90 percent)

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light.
VERY similar to the fluorescent lights you see used in residential, and commercial applications.
(Homes, and businesses)
Only on a MUCH smaller scale in physical size, and needed power to operate.
When a Backlight goes bad, it just goes all at once. Not goes dark as you have stated.

(Your statement meant to me that you power on the laptop, the LCD screen shows well, then goes dark)

How to install an Inverter in a Toshiba Satellite P200 series laptop,

(You can click on each individual photo to enlarge. You are on Page 1. Page 2 is accessed at the bottom, by clicking on it. Page 1::Page 2::Find another model)

Just one of many places that offers an Inverter for your Satellite P200.

NOTE*
1) ALL power removed from the laptop before beginning.
AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

2) The screws you will remove, may have screws that look alike, but are NOT.
Do Not mix them up.
For this reason it is suggested to use a multi-compartment container, and label the compartments for where the screws came out of.
You can use a clean egg container, and label the individual egg holders, in a pinch.

IMHO it isn't hard to perform this repair, and you can do it. Save yourself money.

Toshiba satellite p205-s6267 backlight

Your system is consuming much power.

Go to Control Panel, Power Options.

Click "Advanced Power Settings" for your current power plan.

Under the section "What happens when I close the lid", choose "Do nothing" for both "Battery" and "Plugged-in".

Click "Apply" and "Ok".

Now, close the lid of your laptop and open it, it would restore but next time don't overload your system power.

This is common with Dell and Toshiba.

sounds like backlight bulbs, not easily replaced pretty much gotta send to manufacturer to replace them. The inverter may be failing but because you still get one is why i believe its the bulbs themselves

Toshiba Satellite P200 RT2 won't startup but is holding a charge just fine. Power light, charge indicator, battery indicator appear normal, just nothing on the screen. Please help.

Hook up an external monitor and see if windows loads up, if so it might be a backlight or inverter. if you dont see anything then it might be a hardware failure

Dullahban,

The key functions along the top of the keyboard can not be changed. They are preset and all of that model function the same.
