Question about Danby DPAC120061 Portable Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Do we need to use both hoses?

We have a Danby portable A/C unit. It came with 2 hoses an interior and exterior. I understand that you have to vent the heat outside, but I don't understand why you would have the 2nd hose to **** the hot air in to be cooled. Can we just let the air come into the back of the machine directly?

You could draw the air from inside however the system works much more effeciently with 2 hoses.
The air that is drawn into the unit and heated then exhausted back outside. If you don't use the second hose all the air that is exhausted will have to be drawn in around windows and doors or othe voids in the area. This would draw in warm moist air that would then have to be cooled and dehumidified.

How can I tell whether my portable AC unit is low on freon gas or if the compressor is bad?

You can tell a compressor is running by measuring amp draw but you can check return air temp vs supply air temp. 15 degrees should be minimum temp split.

Why does my portable air conditioner cool for a short period of time and then turn off?
Have you extended the exhaust hose with another? The unit can ONLY be used with the included exhaust hose (dryer type exhaust hoses will cause the unit to over heat).

How close is the unit to the wall? If the unit is only inches away from the wall and you are running the exhaust hose out a window, more than likely their exhaust hose bend is at 90 degrees which restricts air flow. In order for the unit to run more efficiently and not overheat, it should be at least 1-1/2 feet away from the wall and the exhaust hose should not exceed more then a 45 degree angle.
Are you exhausting the unit out a hole in the wall? If so, are you using a flap vent on the exterior of your home/office? The flap may be too rigid and not open continuously. The compressor is not strong enough to push the air through and therefore will only run for a short period of time before overheating and shutting off. You should take the flap off the vent and replace it with a piece of screening.

Are you venting it into a ceiling or basement? Does the ceiling or basement have ample ventilation? If the ceiling or basement does not have a way of pushing the heat from the exhaust to the outside, the unit will work for a short period of time and then eventually overheat and shut off. Where can in get a set of exhaust/intake hoses for a danby dpac120068 air conditioner

Is there a reason not to just go to the Danby site? Support Danby includes phone support, email and "Find Parts" Even if their source is out you should at least be able to find the correct part number, then Google Danby (part number).
You could also look to see if generic flexible vinyl tubing/hose can be substituted. It's doubtful that Danby created their own hoses.

We have 2 Danby air conditioners. One is a Danby Designer, Model DPAC 10060 and the other is a Danby Silhouette Model DPAC 12006. The venting hoses have broken to pieces and we need to buy new ones that...

You can purchase similar hoses at most home improvement center. Take a section of the old hose with you to get the right diameter and use the existing fittings to attach them to the unint and the window exhaust. What you may find is a better quality hose/duct, than what came with the unit. You may have to buy more than you need in length, but then you'll have some left over, if you ever have to replace it again.

Hope this helped. Good luck.

John, unfortunately, you don't have many options, short of putting a hole in an exterior wall and putting an exhaust pipe with a cap (like a dryer vent has) and connecting the exhaust hose to it. OR if you have a clothes dryer in your condo and it's vented to the outside. You could temporarily disconnect the dryer's vent hose and connect the A/C's vent hose to the the dryer's outside vent.

Either way, it may be to much of a hassle . But, I'll let you decide that. I guess it will all depend on how hot your condo gets without A/C.

Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks.

Take it back where you bought it. A 12,000 BTU unit should be more than enough for a 192 square foot room, so there is some problem with the unit.

You use the hose only for continuous draining outside of the unit into a bucket or what have you. You don't need to attach the hose at all. I actually need the hose if you want to part with yours. coatings(at)shaw.ca
