The first place to begin would be to varify that all cables and external connections to speakers or headphones are properly pluged in. Try a diffrent set of speakers or headphones. If that dosnt solve the problem check the volume control and varify that the device volum is turned up atleast halfway. Make sure that the volume is not muted. Generaly there will be a check box under each volume type that must be unchecked for the volume to be controled.
If the above dosnt solve the problem you will need to determine whether the device is functioning by finding the device within the "Device manager", the device manager can be found within the control pannel under hardware.
You want to varify that the device is indeed in the list, and that there are no exclamation points or circles with a line through it. These icons would indicate an error, and are generally yellow or red to catch your eye.
You will want to expand the catagory that is listed as "Sound, Video and game controllers", find the audio device and right click on it. After you right click select Properties from the drop down menu and varify that the device status indicates that the device is working properly.
If the device is not working you will want to obtain the latest drivers, and uninstall the device. When reinstalling the device be sure to specify the location of the driver you have obtained from the manufacturer.
If these steps do not work, or you discover an error that you can not correct, you will need to consider the possibility that the device has maulfunctioned.
If you have access to another audio device you may want to try that device to rule out a failure caused by something else such as a shorted wire or a bad plug jack.
