Since the Nikon EM doesn't have a flash built-in, I assume you're trying to use an external flash. What make and model flash? Are you mounting it on the hot shoe or through the PC cord?

  • katie_bialas Jul 19, 2010

the flash is the nikon sb-e. and its mounted on the hot shoe

The SB-E doesn't have a test button, does it? If it did, I'd ask what happens if you hit it.

Has the flash worked recently? Or has it been sitting for years in a closet with batteries in it? Does it hum when you turn it on?

i just bought it today at a pawn shop and there were really old batteries in it.. i took them out and put new ones in. it doesnt make any sound

  • kakima Jul 19, 2010

Hmmm. Look inside the battery compartment to see whether there's any corrosion on the contacts.

It's a pretty old unit. Was there any guarantee that it still worked? None of my flash units from back then still work; it just might be old age...

Nikon sb400 ready light never comes on nikon d7000

Tried out my sb400 with my d7000, no problem, even with fairly used batteries. Try new batteries again, see how you go. If you use lithium batteries, make sure they are good ones, as lithium batteries die suddenly when used up,and can make you believe there's a problem with your flash. If this doesn't work you may have to send it to a Nikon Service Center

We put new batteries in a Nikon EM and the light does not come on when battery is check...they are in correctly. Does anyone know how a light meter can get broken?

The battery check is by pressing a very small silver button on the top plate by the shutter release and the little red light come on right? there is only two small button batteries in the EM but without them it's a brick. So look inside the battery compartment and at the bottom you will see a spring piece of metal which the batter makes contact with. If it is corroded then you will have to clean that off to make contact again. Take a new pencil with a new unused red rubber eraser and form a piece of sand paper over the end of the pencil and tape it securely. Lightly twist the pencil back and forth between your fingers to sand off the corrosion, make it shinny. Blow out the dusty dirty stuff with a puffer make sure the batteries are installed correctly. Yes I know you said the batteries were in the right way install the batteries check wiht the battery test button. Also don't forget the EM is a totally battery dependent camera for the meter AND the meter will not work until you have the frame counter at frame # 1 and beyond. My Nikon EM has been slightly modified yours might not be the same but I can close the back and advance the lever trip the shutter and again until it reaches frame one and then the light meter works. Cheers great little camera hope you get it working

Bought a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 in August. Tested the flash and it fired ok. I took out the flash a few days ago to use at a graduation and the "ready" light did not come on. Consequently it did...

Hi grwcamp, Sorry to hear about it not working at the graduation. Are in the correct position (I am sure you did but, we must start someplace). Look inside, see if there is battery acid in there.
If with new/fresh batteries it still does not work call Nikon. You have a warranty on it so it should be covered.

Ready light on my SB-800 speedlight

put in a fresh set of batteries. The ready light won't turn on until the flash capacitor is fully charged. And if your battery is weak, it can take very long (minutes!) to fill the capacitor. You still can fire the flash even it is not ready, it will just dump whatever power it stored in the capacitor.

Nikon SB-800 Defect

Have you tried other batteries?

If one cell has died, there will be enough power to power up the flash, but not enough to charge it reasonably fast. It may also stop the other cells charging up properly if they are charged together. I've had this problem with poor quality rechargeables before. I think flashguns put pretty heavy demands on batteries.
