The frost free refers to the cooling coils (Only) these are located behind the back panel in the freezer. I assume you live in a humid area....sorry to say this is somewhat normal.

Why does my maytag mqf1656tew have ice build up on bottom shelf and where is the drain plug at. This is a frost free freezer

Frost Free means that it performs defrost cycles to keep the chiller plate or evaporator fins free of frost. Difficult to know where your frost is, but it can build up on anything this time of year. If your frost is on a part that provides the cooling, then it will need a service visit as the defrost timer is faulty.

Frost build up in coils in my freezer it is supposed to be froze free

Frost free Refrigerators go into defrost cycle every 6-12 hours depending on model.
If frost become visible, on of the defrost system (Defrost timer,Defrost heater, Defrost thermostat) components has failed. The most common failure is the defrost time. If you can locate the time, try to advance it (rotating) into defrost and if you see water coming into the drain-pan within a couple of minutes, than the Heater and thermostat are OK and you need to replace the timer (relatively easy job). If no defrost occur , you better call a tech and avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Caution - Some defrost timer are incorporated into the Ice Maker mechanism are hard to test and must replace the entrie Ice Maker

My fridg and freezer is cold but not could enough the freezer wont keep food frozen. there is no ice build up, I replaced the defrost timer, and I cleaned the fan in the back what else could it be please...

Hello Nicole,

Their are a few things that couldbe causing your refrig.troubles.

1) their is ice build up in the return air vents that is not allowing air to flow correctly
you can see the air vents under the crispers in the ref.floor and can see if they
blocked with ice.

2) the freezer fan is bad and not circulating cold air into and out of the ref.

3) In addation to the defrost timer, perhaps the deforst heater and defrost thermostat are bad and frost is building up in the freezer,Do ya see frost
build up in the freezer??

Icing up

I've just had a similar problem. I fixed it by removing the large panel on the back of the inside of the freezer. I found a large build up of ice at the bottom of the freezer which seems to have developed because the drain hole at the bottom of the freezer was blocked. I defrosted the ice, cleared the drain and now the freezer is working fine.

Frost is building up in bottom freezer. Amana ABB2224DEW

I have this problem as well, only nobody is leaving anything open. The defroster is defective of these things and the duct between the fridge and freezer gets frozen over and the cold air can't get in the fridge, so the freezer keeps working until it's blue in the face.

Fridge not getting any air, freezer is working

I have a Kenmore w/ freezer on bottom. The top vent in the fridge is ducted to the freezer and is supposed to blow air. Mine was not.

I removed all the frozen goods and took off the back panel (inside to unit) which had a little ice on it. Underneath the panel was a solid wall of ice......including the motor which is supposed to blow air up to the 'fridge. I'd bet a beer that is your problem as well.

The ice seized motor will not be harmed because it is resistance loaded.

The best part is with a blow dryer and some elbow grease...the fix is free! I hope it helps.

Build up of ice in bottom of freezer compartment

During the defrost cycle heaters in the wall of the freezer are turned on to melt the frost build up. This melted frost "water" is supposed to run out a drain in the bottom of the freezer and collect in a pan under the refrigerator/freezer where it will eventually evaporate. If this drain is blocked it will cause a lot of water to collect in the bottom of the freezer and that water will eventually turn back into ice. I recommend defrosting the freezer manually, removing all the ice/water buildup in the bottom, and trying to unplug the drain line to the pan underneath. Also check the seal on the freezer door. If it's not sealing well it could be letting a lot of moisture enter the freezer which would lead to more frost buildup and more water during the defrost cycle.
