I'm replacing the gas lines on my john deere lx 279 and I can't figure out how to get the deck adjustment knob off can you help??

check under the control knob for a set screw or threads on the shaft. which would mean the control knob would have to rotated off the shaft, after you loosen the set screw.

What to do to my john deere lx 172 transmission to make it shift easier. the shifter is very hard to move.

Unfortunatly, you have a sealed transaxle, so their is not a place to lubricate it to make it smoother. You can spray wd-40 on the linkage but he binding usually happens inside the transmission.
