It's called a stylus. What red or white caps are we talking about? Some phono cartridges come with stylus guards that flip up out of the way for play or down to protect the stylus from damage while in storage or during tonearm balancing. The stylus needs to touch the record groove directly.

My crosley keepsake turntable has been having a lot of static and the sound is very low, I can only hear it if I turn the volume all the way up. I'm not sure if the needle is the problem or there is s

I would check the wires to the cartridge. It might that one or more is off or loose.
If you turn down the volume completely and listen with a record playing you should be able to hear (with your ear) the stylus in the grooves of the record playing the track. Pick a loud (rock) record for this. If it does that OK the stylus is good.

THE TONE ARM ON MY ROCKOLA 459 SLIDES OVER THE RECORD WITHOUT PLAYING.

Hi
It sounds as if the tone arm has become unbalanced. Make sure the turntable is on a firm flat horizontal surface and at the opposite end of the arm from the needle there will be a weight and a means of altering the position of weight on the tone arm. This weight keeps the needle on the record but only lightly when positioned correctly. If positioned too far from the pivot post the needle will as you have experience skip virtually straight across the record. You need to adjust the weight so that the needle just sits in the groove and plays without being too heavy. It is best to use a record you are not too worried about for this testing as the test record can sometimes get scratched.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

How to play record without needle sounding scratching

If the stylus (not needle) is good then you might have got an incorrect earth wire connection on the cartridge or a bad connection to it. Also check the plugs and wiring between it and the amp. The earth connection might be broken there.

The arm with the needle slides across the LP record - doesn't pick up sound

This is often a problem when you are using a 78 needle on a 45 or 33 record. Some needles can be flipped, so check to see if yours is able to flip between the 78 and 33 setting. If not, you may simply need a new one.

While playing A cd the sound intermittenly stops like A skip and sound comes back but player is never moved

If the CD is the problem it could be scratched or dirty, clean the CD with a CD Cleaner if need be. If the CD mechanism is the problem the sled assembly may not be moving smoothly or is hindered ( the sled mech moves the laser across the CD like a needle arm move the needle across a record), the laser lens may be dirty also. Use a CD lens cleaner to clean the lens if you can not manually clean it with some lens cleaner and a swab. If the sled mechnism is the problem the unit may need to be taken in for service.

I have bought an old B&O beogram rx2 turntable and am having difficulty playing any records. When I press play the needle will sit on the edge of the record but when it moves in to the grooves it seems...

If you cannot see a small tip on the needle then yes it is worn out,but you can check by rubbing your finger over the tip when the system is on,if you hear sound through the speakers then it should play the album, make sure that the weight at the back of the arm is set to keep the needle in the groove as this may be set to far back, move it forward to keep weight on the needle.

hope this helps.

Needle drag

Hi, i know this sounds stupid but have u tried using a different record as the record your using may have a defect which wont allow it to play any further. I would also make sure that you weight the tonearm as much as possible but not to much that you wear ur needles out. Let me know how you get on. Gud luck!
