Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya.
1. Connect the USB device into a different USB port on the laptop or another computer to make sure the problem isn't with the device instead of the port. Check to see if the device has a "Write-Only" tab. Push that tab into the unlocked position if it still isn't working in a different port.

2. Click "Start" and then "My Computer" if the device works in another computer but not on your laptop. Plug a device into the port and wait to see if the USB port shows up in the list of drives. Click on "Map Network Drive" if the drive does not appear. Choose a drive letter from the drop down menu and then double click the location of the USB device. Click "OK" and try to use the port again.

3. Navigate back to the Start menu and then click "Control Panel." Double click on "Device Manager." Scroll down the list of options and click the "+" located to the left of the entry labeled "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Double click the name of the USB port that appears in the new menu. Click the "Drivers" tab and then click "Update Drivers." Wait for the driver to finish downloading and attempt to use the port again.
4. Close the drivers tab and right click the name of the USB port. Click on "Properties." Click the "Power Management" tab and then un-check the check box labeled as "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Choose the "Communications Port" tab and then scroll down to the box labeled "Resources." Click the "Enable Device" button and then click "OK." Attempt to use the USB port again.

5. Close the Properties tab and right click the name of the USB port. Click on "Uninstall." Restart the laptop and then plug a device into the USB port. Wait for a new window to pop up and follow the on-screen instructions to re-install the USB port software.

6. Restart the computer and press the "F1" button on the laptop's keyboard once the manufacturer's name appears on the screen. Scroll down through the list of options that appear and highlight the option labeled as "Advanced." Press "Enter" and then scroll down and press "Enter" on the "USB Support" option. Press "F10" to save the settings and finish loading the operating system.

7. Open your web browser if your laptop is running the Windows XP operating system. Click on this link and download the Windows XP USB 2.0 driver . Restart the computer and try to use the USB port again.

If the problem is still there then If its a hardware problem, replacing the USB sockets may not be enough, considering they all went at the same time, I would say its a problem on the mother board. Something might have fused with the heat. Laptops have a real problem keeping cool because they are so compact.

Is it still under warranty, return to vendor

Good luck and have a nice day.

Usb not working

This could be a problem with your USB drivers. Check through the device manager to see if all the USB ports drivers are installed. If not, re-install the USB drivers. This will solve your problems.

Usb ports

You'll want to verify your computer recognizes your usb ports.
In device manager, look to see that you don't have anything with an exclamation mark, question mark, or red X on it. Make sure you have the usb ports listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers. If nothing shows, your usb ports may be dead. Depends on the age of your computer and what might have happened to them.

Device manager- right-click My Computer and go to properties, then select the hardware tab.

Compaq Presario v2000 w/ dead USB ports

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario V2000. Lost both USB ports and HP tells me that the motherboard has to be replaced at $300 +..I searched and found a PCMCIA card with two USB ports for $10. No problems with the USB ports on this card..great and cheap solution.
My belief is that the compaq usb ports do not have power limiting circuitry therefore allowing you to overload the output power on the ports. My ports failed after I downloaded into a burglar alarm system I was programming.
