Disconnect the cable between the scanned lid and the bed. Lift off the lid. Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screes that are located where the lid's hinges were. Carefully lift off the top portion of the bed starting at the back. As you approach the front, push it towards the control panel to remove. The front pulley will have either one or both of the plastic flanges will be broken (hopefully just one. In my case, I just used duct tape to hold the pulley down tightly. Power it up to ensure that it's fixed before puttingthe top part of the base back on. If it's not connected to your computer, you should get a flashing green light, or solid green if it's talking to your computer. Put the top part of the bed back on, screw it down and re-attatch the lid.

If the scanning light is not working during the scanning procedure itself that issue could be generated by two causes:
1. an improper power connection
This case check again if all connecting ends (the wall outlet plug-in and the jack that comes into the scanner power supply hole) are properly inserted
2. the scanning light is out
This case the light must be replaced. But because it's an expensive light output I'd suggest you to forget this option (buying a new light output) and focus on buying a totally new scanner machine...
The previous solution was offered assuming that the scanner itself is recognized by the computer and the "scan" command is properly taken.
But in case the computer "doesn't see/doesn't detect" the scanner leads to the third solution (apart of the other mentioned two before...):
see if the scanner driver is properly installed and works accordingly to the operating system; also check the USB connector. If everything OK then return to the solutions 1 & 2.
