I have the solution...
u see where the switch on button is ? next to it there are two buttons ...ones for stopping internet connection ...thats the one on the right. the one on the left is the one for locking the touchpad
if that button has a orange light blinking on it it means its locked ..
so just push the button and see if it works :) .

Excellent work. Tried the F7 and F8 toggles suggested elsewhere on the web and the manual did not give this neat solution. the orange light was not blinking but static on. Great news my daughter is going back to uni in a couple of days and now it is sorted. Happy New Year. Have added this site to my favourites to save searching the web for the next problem. Thanks!

You would think that Acer would include this a Frequently Asked Question or have an exclamation on the taskbar to warn that the hardware is disabled.

The Acer support dude suggested backing up, ordering re-install DVD from acer, reinstalling windows and restoring data. They didn't mention that there was a DISABLE THE TRACKPAD button.

I was searching to find the 'enable F12 boot menu' to try an Ubuntu Live CD and found this comment!

You have saved us hours of wasted and futile effort. Big thanks.

Chocoboloni -- good man! I found the solution in an Ireland/UK blog after reinstalling the latest touchpad driver from OEM but touchpad still didn't work. I rebooted my dual boot system with linux os and touchpad still didn't work with linux drivers. Oh no! I have a hardware problem I thought! However, the blog stated check for touchpad toggle button or switch first. I looked up the owners manual online and voila! The touchpad power button was to the left of the laptop power button! It was an idiotic hardware problem of touching the touchpad button and turning it on! I thought I would have to open my laptop up and check for a loose ribbon cable to touchpad. Boy this stuff makes you feel stupid for not paying attention! This is what a former tech support rep calls an ID10T (idiot) phone caller on the line. Guess we all make stupid mistakes once in a while.

I HAVE THE SOLUTION!!!
The Microsoft Driver Updater is not working in all computers!
You can install the free driver update software DriverMax, or you can uninstall and install the touchpad driver, you can find the touchpad via Google.

The touchpad can be deactivated. Try to hold the Fn key on your keyboard while you press F7 to activate it. There might also be a separate key to deactivate/activate touchpad.

There should be an image on the number or function rows of the keyboard that is colored the same color as the FN key. On that look for the one that resembles the touch pad, press and hold the FN key then press the touchpad key to activate the touchpad. I think it is the F7 key.

My touchpad mouse is not working

you can try pressing fn-f7 to turn it back on.. hold the fn key like a shift key, then tap f7 (it turns the touchpad on and off on the zg5 series units.) the icon looks like a touchpad with a finger.

Mousepad not working

Hello,

Each Touchbad should have basic functionality by default in every Operating system, letting it be used even when no driver is installed. However, try pressing FN and F7 together and see if the touchpad works again. Some people accidently press this FN + F7 key when they mute the sound with the FN + F8 key.

The FN + F7 is there to disable/enable the touchpad as some people use a USB mouse instead of the touchpad.

If you still need the drivers, here are the download links. Please choose desired driver by Operating system and Touchpad brand...

I just fixed this problem...the fn & f7 didnt work... at the top of computer where you turn the machine off and on - there is a button to the left. Press this button [not the on/off btn] and it should work.
