Hi,

Typically the start switch also includes the relay to hold the motor on once it is up to speed. If you have the model number from the tag just inside the door I can look up the wiring diagram and let you know for sure on your model.

    Hi,

This model does NOT use the latching relay on the start switch. The start switch is only a momentary contact switch.

so what latches the moter on this model?

  • Philip Jul 19, 2010

There is a switch call a centrifugal switch inside the motor that engages.

Here is a link to the wiring diagram

    Wiring Diagram

If you look on the diagram, just to the right of center on the top diagram the contacts 5M and 6M are the centrifugal contacts that hold the motor on. Bottom line is, if the motor is not holding on, the motor needs replaced.

Dryer won't start

If you look closely, there are 3 separate pins that must latch. One is a simple push-button style which latches no problem.
The others are little prongs at the top and bottom of door. The bottom prong latches cleanly, but the top one will not latch because the door is a bit too flexible.
Close the door normally, then firmly press on the top edge of the door. You will hear the final latch grab, then you press and hold the start button. The dryer starts normally.

When start button is pushed, dryer only runs for a second. Hold the button in and it runs and dries. It just doesn't stay on.

The start button is usually a "latching relay". It sounds like the relay part is bad. The only way to check it is with a voltmeter and a schematic. If you can't do that you can take a chance on just replacing the switch.

I just purchased a used dryer which was supposed to be in good working order. I get it home and hook it up and push the button to start it and NOTHING happens. The start button feels a little funny, could...

I'd start off by checking the door switch. The dryer door might not be closinjg far enough to trigger the latch. Just with the door open push in the latch and see if the dryer comes on.

Dryer problem

with power disconnected
follow the wires from the start button, to a relay,
check the wires (both ends) of all leads to the relay and reconnect any that have fallen off. (crimp tighter if they have fallen)
Check door switch function and connection.
check timer connections
the relay start-button timer and door switch comprise a latching circuit, when the start button is pressed the relay is supposed to latch closed and supply current to heater and motor. if the latching circuit disconnects the relay does not latch closed, and only runs as long as the start button is pressed.
if nothing has disconnected one side of the relay has usually failed, and the connection is not being made to latch the circuit
replace relay
cd48320.jpg relay is shown at right, 2 switches connected by a dashed line.

The start button is a low current signalling device that supplies power to a relay, the relay latches, to supply heavy current to the heater and motor, until the timer switch or door switch interrupt the latching circuit and disconnect the relay.
Relays fail
the connector for the latching circuit may have come off
examin inside the control panel for a device that looks like
8d35bce.jpg, may be opaque or mounted vertically with wires connected to the bottom.
trace the wires from the start button, it should be the first device connected.
If any wires have come off relay, or other terminus of wire reattach and test operation of dryer
If no wires off, -replace relay
label carefully wires as they are removed, or replace one wire at a time, from old to new
generic dryer circuit looks like this
c062e7f.jpg the relay is the two switches at right connected by a dashed line to show linked operation. Circuit diagram has no relevance to physical position of components

check also,
  • the other ends of all cables connected to the relay,
if the other end of any part of the latching circuit has loosened, the relay will not latch closed when the start button is pressed.
  • Door Switch, it is part of the latching circuit

That should be just a push to start switch. The start switch is inside the motor. When the motor turns fast enough it trips an internal switch to keep the motor running. It sounds like you have a motor on the way out.
