Question about Brother MFC-5840CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
Have you installed the printer software on your system, if no, please install the printer software on your system and restart the system after the installation of the software on your computer.
But if you have and yet, no still communicating, check the printer cable that connect the printer to your system, if possible, replace it and test with another cable to see if it will communicate.
This should fix the problem, need more information, drop your comment, i will follow up.

For that make sure usb cable is working fine.Make sure usb ports of computer is fine try in different usb ports. Make sure printer show online status.If still same issue then uninstall printer driver and usb driver from device manager. For that press windows key +R key on keyboard at a time so you can see device manager then uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install all usb drivers then go to start menu->control panel->add remove program then uninstall printer driver from there too.
