You need to take a soil sample. Remove any vegetation and get a soil sample from about 6" down. Take this sample to your county extension service and have it tested. Some universities will also test the soil for you. In order to know what to add to your soil, you have to know the current condition of the soil. Just throwing fertilizer or lime at the soil is not the way to go and could be a waste of money. The results of the soil test will tell you exactly what your soil needs. Using this method will save you money because you will know exactly what to add to the soil and you will not be guessing.

Mower starts but when you engage mower it stops

Check for a weak battery. On some lawn tractors the mowing deck is started by an electric switch, and when the deck is engaged it pulls all the remaining power from the battery thus robbing the engine of the current it needs.

MTD 13hp lawn tractor . Belt problem

If you have the manual look and see if you are missing a spring on an idler. They sometimes break or get weak. Next how old is the belt because they will stretch. If you have a little play in the belt I would say it is stretched. If a lot of play then you are probably looking at a spring that is bad.
