Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook

1 Answer

Dell laptop i pushed fn and the power button and the same thing, happens. the little cap lock light (the key with the A in it) flashes about 10 times with the power key lit as well. i did manage to get to the dell start up screen once while doing this and it froze up again. Hi, You can run a PSA diagnostics on your computer , to invoke this test you need to hold the Fn key down , and then push the Power button , it will run the diagnostics test on complete Hardware and will give you related error messages about the failure component. You can also run the Extended test on your computer, it takes 4 hours to complete and then it gives out the error msgs , do let me know the error msgs once it completes the test.

ok, we have narrowed it down a little i think. normally, it won't boot
up at all. my husband took a memory out and now it boots up but
operates at about half speed. what could be wrong?

Remove the CD Drive from the computer , disconnect the charger from the computer , flip the laptop and remove the battey, with the battery disconnected , push the power button for 10 secs to release the flea power , open the memory slot , remove both the memory sticks and then put back only one of the memory stick and then try restarting your computer. If it gives out the msg amount of memory changed , then Strike F1 to continue...

yes it will run at a slow speed only because you have taken out one of the memory stick, you can put it back again and restart the computer and if it boots to windows then there are no issues .
if it doesnot boot then you have to remove the memory out and restart again .
in order to find the damage part on your computer perform the following steps

lets remove the memory which is working fine and boots the system from the slot where it is installed and put that into a different slot and restart the computer. it will give you 2 results either it boots up or it would not start .
    1) if it boots to windows then its an issue with the memory and you have to purchase a new memory stick.

    2) if it doesnot boot to windows then its an issue with the motherboard , and the motherboard has to be replaced....

Let me know once you try these steps

I have Dell latitude d630, It is switching on but no display, when I switch on my laptop, its num lock light is on. capslock light works when i use caps button. Power light is on but hard drive light...

Attach an external monitor. Does the external come on? May have to use the FN key + F8 to toggle it between the LCD and the attached monitor.

When you say that the laptop LCD glows a little bit, this makes me think the back light of the LCD has gone bad. If it displays fine on the external, then it is a pretty good chance the LCD back light has failed. If you can attach an external monitor and see something on it, run the built hardware test. This is done from a powered down state. Then press the FN key + Power, this places it into the diagnostic. Follow the on screen instructions. If it comes back with an error code, write this down and compare it to this list at Dell website. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=14B3819735D6B40EE0401E0A55177ED2

Occasionally, reseating the LCD video cable to the mother board will have a positive effect. Here is a link to the online service manual that explains how to reset it. In the diagram it is labeled #5 It is located under the keyboard.

Have a dell laptop but it doesnt start when i push the power key a little lock with the letter a inside blinks what does this mean then the computer shuts off by itself

That icon is the indicator for Caps Lock (aka Shift Lock). When in the operating system (Windows), you can turn the icon on (or should be able to) by pressing the CAPS Lock key, and turn it off by pressing the CAPS Lock key again.

Dell inspiron 2200 laptop - what are the 4 lights on top right of keyboard for? the first one is constantly blinking and the others are never lit up

Hi those are your keyboard and status lights

Looking at your laptop from the front the first light on your Right hand side is your scroll lock light and is only on when you press the scroll lock button (the symbol shows a lock with a little down arrow)

The light to the left hand side of that light is your caps lock light and again only turns on when you press the caps lock key (The symbol shows a lock with a A in it)

The light to the left hand side of that is your numeric keypad light (Symbol has a lock with a 9 in it), this comes on when you press the num lock key on your keybaord

Finally the last key is your hard drive light (like a cylinder), this will be flashing most of the time as you use your PC as it is constantly reading and writing data

Shauqat

Dell Inspiron 1520- Blank screen, Caps Lock flashes 45 times...

If it does not even post or show the DELL Logo then this may already be a hardware failure. The best thing to do is to contact Dell Tech Support. Specially if you still have warranty. It could already be a couple of things ranging from the memory to the motherboard itself.

My function keys are turned on. how do i turn it

Press the Fn key and the Num Lk key... the reason that your j is a 1 is that the J key is the equivalent of the 1 when the Number lock key is activated. There is a little light up near the power button that shows a lock with a 9 in it... hit the Fn key and the Num Lk key till that light goes out.

The 3 LED's (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock) are used by Dell to diagnose no-post issues such as yours. The only error code close to yours is [Num Lock ON, Caps Lock FLASHING, Scroll Lock ON]. This indicates a a memory error. Try reseating the memory modules. If you have 2 memory modules, insert one at a time to determine the faulty module.
