My poulan pro GCV 160 mower will not start. Has gas, oil just bought it last summer..not an easy start.

Hi less4yourlea..

Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug, if you are then:
Check your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.

Remove the carburetor and check the impulse passage behind it for bad gaskets or a plugged passage. Remove the lower chamber cover on the carburetor and check the diaphragm for flexibility with no holes or cracks. Also check the needle valve that the diaphragm controls for damage to the tip or any debris. Make sure that all of the carburetor fasteners are tight. Remove the spark plug and test for blue, snappy spark with a fresh plug gapped at 0.020". If weak looking, remove the left side case to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Turn the flywheel magnets under the module poles, insert a thin business card into the pole gaps, and loosen the module screws to allow the module to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws and turn the flywheel somewhat to remove the card. Turn the flywheel one full turn to make sure the gaps don't close further. With luck, this should help!

I have a poulan pro 4018. THe chain saw will start, but it appears that the choke is on full blast. As soon as it starts, the chain is moving - unsafe at the moment - I can use it as long as I don't...

Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Turn the idle speed screw (T) CCW somewhat to prevent the chain from turning at idle. If the above doesn't allow the engine to run without the choke on, then remove the carburetor, clean the interior with spray carburetor cleaner and check the diaphragm in the lower chamber for flexibility with no holes or cracks. Hope this helps!

Poulan pro 42cc starts when choked, take off choke runs almost 1 minute and dies.chock and restart same thing. will not stay running even when throttled.

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Inspect the fuel lines for decay or other damage. If no help, remove the carburetor, disassemble and clean the interior with spray carburetor cleaner. Check the condition of the diaphragm in the lower chamber--it should be flexible with no holes or cracks. Also check the small needle valve that the diaphragm controls. Check the crankcase impulse passage behind the carburetor for gasket failure or other damage. This passage pulse-pumps additional fuel into the carburetor as it runs. Hope this helps!

Check the fuel filter and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for condition. Check the carburetor fasteners for tightness. If the saw has a lot of hours, remove the lower section of the carburetor and check the condition of the diaphragm--it should not be hard/cracked. If everything seems to check out ok, Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then CCW each 1-1/2 turns. The engine should start and run--allow the engine to warm up. Pull the throttle full on and adjust H needle CW til the engine speeds up, but still 4-strokes. Proper adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Let idle and adjust L CW so that the engine runs fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust the idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Poulan saw wont run

Clean the muffler spark arrestor screen and check the cylinder port for carbon build-up at the upper edge. Try presetting both carburetor H and L adjustments (from lightly CW stops) 1-1/2 turns CCW each. Start the engine and allow to warm up. Pull the throttle wide open and adjust H CW until the engine speed increases, but still 4-stroking. Correct setting is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Allow to idle and adjust L for smoother running, yet allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed to keep the engine running, but doesn't try to move the chain. You may have to look closer at your carburetor if the above doesn't help. Go to:

for an excellent article (but poor pix) on Walbro carburetors, but related to most all 2-stroke carburetors. Hope this helps!

Starts then dies unless you keep pushing the red bulb

You will have to remove the fuel bowl from bottom of carburetor and clean the varnish out of the carburetor.Take note that the screw on the bottom of the carburetor is a fuel metering jet, there are small passages in it that may need to be cleaned out with a small wire,be careful not to enlarge the holes in it,they are important for fuel metering correctly. You may have to soak it in carb cleaner. Be sure to use good carb cleaner. The brand name Berkebile 2+2 is the best followed by Gumout.

The leaf blower won't start and I did change the spark plug and last time it run for like 30 sec. before it shut down again.

Main cause of small gasoline engine failure is carburetor clogged. Try spraying carburetor cleaner into carburetor and intake. Check if unit has air cleaner. If engine starts briefly with cleaner then carburetor needs manual cleaning. Carburetor removal and overhaul.
