When you plug in the normal cigarette liter into the socket does it pop up hot? if so I suggest trying to replace the power cord to the tom tom. your car only puts out 13.8 volts. any more than that the fuses would blow.

Car dashboard lights wont turn on and smell of burning wires

If you're smelling insulation burning - STOP. Fuses should be blowing before insulation melts / burns.

Have the car checked my a trusted mechanic before using anything in the car that makes the wiring burn or melt.

My tom tom will not turn on

Possibly a voltage overload. You will be able to smell the buring at the USB socket power point. Needs to be sent in to the workshop for repairs and various chips and diodes need to be replaced

Tom Tom One XL. Wont start and smells of burning! Does it sound terminal?

sounds like it is time for a GPS upgrade, when you go looking for a new GPS consider this, I see allot more problems here on fixya with Tomtom than with Garmin units about 10 to 1.

Burning smell came out of the Tom Tom 910. Now does not boot up on mains or car cigar lighter socket

The power supply or voltage transformer or possibly capacitor is burnt out. You will have to visually inspect the main control board for burn marks and swelled up capacitors. You can use an ohmmeter to test them as well.

MY CAR HAS A BURNING RUBBER SMELL AND THE STEERING IS GETTING A LITTLE HARDER. PLEASE HELP, I AM A WOMAN WITH NO MECHANIC EXPERIENCE AND I AM TRYING TO KNOW A LITTLE SOMETHING BEFORE I TAKE IT TO A...

The burning rubber smell may be a slipping belt; as the belt slips it will literally overheat to a point it has a burning smell (it will not burst in to flames though) The belt I would expect, given you issue, is that of the power steering pump. If the pump is beginning to sieze (not wanting to turn) the belt may begin to spin on the pump pulley. Curious if you have any noise of the belt slip, typically a high-pitched squeal? If the belt is slipping it should have a glazed or shinny look to it. In writting I come to think that just the belt itself may be old/worn, not to proper tension and causing the issue. In short if this is the issue it may be as simple of replacing the belt and put to proper tension or poosibly the power steering pump has begun to fail. The attached image may help

I hope this may have assisted you,

BURN SMELL NO PICTURE

Burned smell indicates some board level component has shorted and /or burned. Also, there could be high voltage arcing which has burned through the wire insulation. Safety circuit has shut down the unit to prevent further damage or fire hazard

Burning odor, no heat

A burning smell along with a different sound (growl) USUALLY indicates a breakdown in the High Voltage Side. This is not a direct short (short circuit) or the line fuse would have blown shutting everything down. The High Voltage Side is made up of-- The Secondary ,or High Voltage Side of The High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, A High Voltage Capacitor, and The Magnetron. If The High Voltage Transformer is the problem it will smell like a florescent light ballast burning, and will smell each time you turn on the MW. A HV Diode burns and opens, thus no more smell. A HV Capacitor usually does not burn nor does the Magnetron. There is no Cheap-Fix unless you can see that the HV Diode is burned into and you can get to it to replace. CAUTION: Always unplug from power before attempting to repair. NOTE: If you replace a Diode make sure it goes back in the same direction it came out. Yes there is a front and back.
