If your Dell desktop computer does not have a SATA controller on the motherboard, and if you have a spare PCI slot, then you need to purchase a PCI SATA controller to go with the SATA hard disk.

From your comment I assume you have already checked your motherboard and found the SATA controller and the SATA connectors.

Because there are no SATA drivers in the installation CD for Windows 2003 (this also applies to XP) you need to go to the BIOS to turn off native SATA and enable IDE emulation.

It depends on what type of drive you are using. Plus, you may have to specify the array controller drivers if your are using the SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives.

Laptop cannot find new sata disk

Can you provide me the details of the laptop. Also; are to trying to install Windows XP OS on your notebook.

If you are trying to install Windows XP on your notebook; then we need to disable the SATA on the notebook by using the external USB based floppy drive or using the nlite application burning the XP OS disc with a set of SATA drivers to install and recognize the hard drive.

DELL Optiplex GX110 freezing

Check the settings of the internal setups. This is using the BIOS itself and hitting a particular key before anything happens. On some machines it is F1 or the DEL key. In the basic setup there are settings for the boot order and floppy drives and HD type. Make sure these are set correctely.

ALSO on one of mine I have to use a formatting/partitioning program supplied by the HD manufacturer (in this case Maxtor) to pre-prepare the drive beofre trying to install WIndows.

I think my HD went out, so I bought a new one, gx280 compatible

set the SATA OPERATIONS to RAID/AUTODETECT in bios...and then do the reinstallation

you may have to even install the raid drivers which is available on the dell resource cd...when u start setup at one point it gives you an option to press F6 to install third party drivers opt for it and install the raid drivers using resource cd if the first option doesn't help

CANT GET WINDOWS XP PRO TO COPY FILES TO A GX280

The problem is the driver for the sata hard drive. You would need to get that from the dell site and put it on a floppy disk, then at the start of the windows install select to install that driver. I ended up just installing the rc version of windows 7 and it worked out fine.
