what's the indicator? no boot? no video? no beep (codes)? remember that heat's the main enemy regarding mb's. how old is your sys? when's the last time that box was blown out via compressed air (to rid it of dust)? never? could be a blown mb/cpu (however cpu failure is very rare). oh. ALWAYS pull the power cord BEFORE plugging/unplugging ANYTHING that is NOT designed "hot-swappable" (such as USB/Z
Firewire). thus if YOU'VE done that the situation may not bode well for your mb. reason? most mb's designed in the past 10 years power up via "soft" button (line voltage is NOT present at the power switch... only VDC). result? your mb ALWAYS has stand-by applied IF the power cord is plugged in AND the power supply switch is on (if one exists).

Then the onboard Ethernet circuit has also been fried. Go in the BIOS and disable it then install a simple PCI LAN card (that can be bought for less than $15 at every pc shop) to get a new ethernet connection.

Hi, My l305-s5875 Satellite laptop stops working when the power adapter is plugged in and the battery doesn't last more than an hour.

I've seen this happen on several different cases. There could be one of two things that can be going on.

1. Your Charger is bad (but not completely bad). I mean that it took an inverted charge and every time you plug it in, instead it turns off your computer, or drains whatever power you have in it. It can rightfully explain the lowered usage of your battery.

- Sometimes taking a magnetized object (like a screwdriver) can be touched to the tip of the charger and it can reverse the polarity. WARNING!!!! UNPLUG THE CHARGER BEFORE DOING THIS!!! YOU MAY GET YOUR BRAINS FRIED IF YOU DON'T!!!
I would say that maybe 60/40 chance it would work. Otherwise try another charger. Universal chargers can be bought at Compusa.com or Best Buy relatively cheap. As low as $35-45.

2. On the motherboard, there is the plug-in area where the charger goes. It might be experiencing a short. This can usually happen due to faulty wiring, or a fall, bump, hit, or crack to the computer.

On a side note. If your computer is over 1.5 years of age, the battery is going to start lasting less and less. Most Lithium-Ion batteries have a primary lifespan of 2-2.5 years. Some go out before, some go out after. It's all a bell-curve.

Thanks

I have a hp pavilion a177c desktop. i opened the case to replace the SATA harddrive and SATA dvd rom and cmos battery. also cleaned out all the dust i could see(which was almost none). after hooking...

You don't say how you cleaned the motherboard. It only takes a small knock or static spark to kill electronics. PCI and I/O control is done by a chip on the motherboard and if this is fried you will need a new motherboard. The only way to check is with specialist hardware. take it to a computer repair specialist ( not PC world- too expensive) the cmos battery shouldn't have needed replacement after a maximum of 5 years. I have batteries that have lasted over 20 years. incidentally if you have replaced the cmos battery you would have to setup the bios again anyway.

My computer got wet and now it doesn't work. Do I need a new motherboard? Water poured into it while it was off, so I told everyone it was down. A friend tried to ''fix'' it by turning it on. Now it just...

At least the motherboard is fried. My guess is that everything in it is dead since when a motherboard dies a nasty death like this it drags down everything with it.
Lesson for the future: if there's even the slightest whiff of water near some sensitive electronics then disconnect it from the power until you are ABSOLUTELY sure the water is gone.

replacing the mobo is much cheaper that to purchase a new computer but purchasing a new computer is much better than replacing your mobo. because in the near future, you need to upgrade your system for better use.

Ms 6787 no signal input

since you said you do not know anything anything about the jumpers and stuff, probably i suggest you take it to a nearest computer specialist to do it right for you. one thing you have to check up when installing a new motherboard is you power supply, does it have more or less power output? is the local disc or hard drive connected correctly? if you have no idea on all of this then there is a need to have a specialist to do it right for you becauase if not, there would be nothing for you computer to display.

looking forward to hear from you.

thanks,

Plugged the computor into too high of voltage. i.e. 24v instead of 19v. Was told this has blown out motherboard

Hi,
What you have been told is probably correct, plugging a much larger power supply into a device that is made to take less voltage will in 99% of cases fry the components on the motherboard rendering it useless so yes the motherboard will have no doubt blown out.

Won't boot up

Emachines are notorious for motherboards and power supplies frying after a power outage. Why? Even after 10 years of working on desktops from all manufacturers... this eludes me.

1)The power switching chip or chipset usually goes first. My best guess is be casue the power supplies in these desktops are VERY inexpensive. IT's amazing if they last longer than 1 year.

Replace power supply.. if doesn't boot still... replace motherboard.

2) If i'm waaay off and you get a boot screen or emachine logo.. but no windows logo... then hard drive crashed or file system got shot...

Replace hard disk and reinstall windows.. contact data recovery specialist. DYI data recovery .. causes more data loss... speaking from experience.
