Question about Sony PlayStation® 3 (60 GB) Console

2 Answers

PS3 not reading games or blu-ray. I know I can buy a manual or bring it into sony. I want to know what part fails on them? Is it the actual eye in the drive or some associated component? Thanks.

PS3's (all models) are known to have a high failure rate when it comes to there optical drives. Due to the fact that it reads neither medium i would say that the drive (along with the lense and reading eye) has failed entirely. The only solutions are to buy a new one, or if its under warranty call tech support and find out who to send it to for repair

Either the bd drive tract is misaligned and needs to be aligned properly or the lens laser has died out or the drive itself has movement issues, best bet you can try before sending in is to reformat your ps3 and see if that works, worked for me there was just a bad sector on the hdd which stopped the ps3 from reading discs

I just bought this PS3 from a pawn shop and it wont read PS3 disks. It will read and play PS2 game discs (some games have a few glitches, but most work fine). I'm not sure how the system differentiates...

Yes you guess right blu-ray has failed. You need to swap the laser out. If I were you I would return to pawnshop and let them know you want either all your money back or at least a partial refund to cover repair costs.

You could repair yourself ($50) or find a local tech / company to fix ($100) or have Sony replace (150+)

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can help :)

Tip

If your ps3 reads everything but blu-ray or won't read anything go by my steps.

Most likely you need a new eye.My ps3 wasn't reading neither. At first it was reading everything but blu-ray.Then it wasn't reading anything.Little circle in corner be spinning and everything.I cleaned my eye I used cd cleaner didn't work.My system is out of warranty so had to get it fixed on own.So i opened it got a q-tip wiped it off with alcohol switched ends. With dry tip and dried the eye off. That will help you if your ps3 reads everything but blu-ray.But all it was really doing is telling me my eye was dying.Suddenly it read nothing so I invested in a new eye.Put it in myself now she's running like a champ.Hope this help but if your system still play dvd movies and ps2 games.Your blu-ray is acting up go by my steps first. Before destroying your ps3 or buying another might be a 50 dollar problem.Compared to sony 160 to send you another used 1.You can find a blu-ray eye cheap this days on internet.

Purchased 60GB backward compatable PS3 ( used). Will not play games, PS2 or PS3, they freeze up.

There are 3 main causes and solutions:

Software Issue (Restore the PS3 to factory settings via Sytem, Settings, Restore PS3

Dirty blu-ray lens ( take the PS3 apart and clean the laser eye carefully with a DRY q-tip.

Faulty / Failing blu-ray drive ( check and secure all of the cables to the blu-ray drive)

If the issue persists then more than likely you'll need to swap the blu-ray laser out with a new one.

There are a ton of guides on ps3hax.net and youtube.

Hope this info helps!

PS3 Laser DVD/Blu-ray

the blue ray laser has two high energy beams at 450nm(bluelight) and 730nm (redlight). the highpower diode on your machine im afraid has failed. you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from sony (150+TAX 2 week wait)
Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often

My ps3 wont play blue ray discs or my games anymore

if your ps3 doesnt play ANY games or dvds, that may mean that the eye on the ps3(the thing that reads the disks and dvds) is malfunctioning, not moving efficiently enough to procces the disk, not recognizing the encrypted code on the disks, or the optical eye could even be scratched. the disk feed could also not be feeding the disk in far enough for the eye to read it. i would definitly suggest calling customer service and/or bringing the ps3 to an A+ certified technition to "diagnose" your problem.

80 g ps3 will only read the ps2 games

your blu-ray laser has failed. it has three parts, blu-ray, dvd, and cd. They all use different components so when one fails the others still work. Your laser needs to be replaced. I offer that service for $130. I believe sony does it for 140. good luck.

Ps3 not loading games

The Blu Ray diode actually contains 3 diodes in it.
Looks like the blu ray one is out, the other 2 still function.
You may need to purchase a KES-400AAA replacement.
