Question about SmartDisk PhotoBank PB40 40 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

SmartDisk Digital Photo Bank Model#PB40

Conked out after only 4 months and 8 Gb of use. Still turns on but won't copy files. Nothing but light on the LED screen. Managed to download the photos to my computer. Contacted company on Jan. 28. Company responded Feb. 21 promising to email a fix. Never happened. Now I'm trying one more time before that expensive piece of junk hits the dumpster and I start shopping for something else.

Contacting the manufacturer doesn't get any response. My PB 40 shows it is copying files from the CF card, but once the card is removed, no files show on the screen. When it is hooked to a computer, the pc indicates it is attached, but when I try to acces it the pc says to insert a disc. 3 out of 5 times it has made the computer crash.

Same problem with a CF card. The SanDisk unit is a piece of junk. Dont buy it. Absolutely no help from factory. Can be used as a door stop however.

Stored my photos on the "Not so" Smart Disk. The thing will not even turn on after one year!!!!!!!!!!!!. Any suggestions before I give it to the dog to chew on?

My PB 40 system won't boot. Display lights up and the disk drive spins but nothing happens. I can still access the drive and look at the pictures. I even see some pictures that I tried to copy from a compact flash memory chip (although the screen never indicated that the copy was in progress or complete.  At this point the best I can do is pull the hard drive, get a USB adapter box and make a back up drive out of it (and toss the rest).  It was great while it worked but what a disappointment now.

If it won't copy...but you can still see the files...plug the smartDisk in then...insert the memory card you wish to copy and it will show up as another drive...then drag the photo folder on the memory card to the folder called CARDS on the photobank should let you copy the memory card that way. I still agree with most of the comments above...bummed that this stopped working as it was great to have when i was travelling. good thing i've backed up my photos. Don't put all your faith in this little harddrive even though it is convienient.

No, the problem isn't solved. I paid the $19.95 for your "premium assistance" which consisted of telling me about the SmartDisk warranty and advising me to contact the company. As my "problem" points out, "been there, done that." No response from the company. Your technician just went to the company's web site and read it to me. I had already done that, too. If your "technician" could have advised me about how to fix the device, or even how to get the company to respond, he would have been worth the $19.95. He couldn't and didn't. Needless to say, I'm still p1ssed off and $19.95 poorer.

Have 40 gig photobank smartdisk, trying to download memory sticks, loaded with photos. but as i attempt on my macbook.......a download site called 'bounceback' pops up. can you tell me what i should do ?

For "bounceback", see: http://www.cmsproducts.com/products/backup_software/bounceback/bounceback_mac.html

BounceBack is software to simplify the process of making backup copies of your files.

Click "Cancel", and then use whatever software & methods of your choice, e.g., "drag-and-drop", to copy your files from your internal disk-drive to the external storage.

SmartDisk turns on, has a blue light but shows no icons. I was in the process of copying from my camera. I turned on the SmartDisk, it showed a file icon and the HDD icon. I pressed copy and it...

I had the same problem but it felt like the drive was working. I took a chance, inserterd a 4GB CF card, and pressed the copy button. I hoped it would shut off after the copy was made due to the 30 second inactiviy timeout. After about 10 minutes, the blue backlight to turned off and it powered down. I plugged the Photobank into a laptop via USB cable and checked the original CF card files against the Photobank files. Success! All files were copied!

I have a Smartdisk PB80 PhotoBank

I have a pb80, and I found that it would not read SD above 2 g.
It reads a 2 g fine, but not a 4 g.
I also have a reader with the same problem. I replaced the reader with a different model, and it works fine. Planned obsolence.

Lossing firmware.because i format.digitalphotobank model PB#40 smartdisk

The Photobank must be formatted in FAT32 to work. If you formatted in any other format, go to http://sdkbase.smartdisk.com/display/2n/index.asp?c=cpc=e72ylkXWR8u0YnrbMviY&cpc=&cid=1&r=0.8182337

You will see a file on the right hand side... It is a short program that will reformat the drive in FAT32. Just follow the directions on the page

Hope this works for you/
