The filter is located on the water inlet to the heater, it's a reuseable filter.
I've listed the steps to remove it and how to clean it.
Allow the water to cool before removing the filter to avoid scalding.

1. Close the water supply valve.
2. Open all hot water fixtures.
3. With a bucket ready, remove the inlet and outlet
drain plugs (about 0.2 gal. will drain out)
4. Take the water drain valve (with water filter) out
of the inlet.
5. Clean the water drain valve (with water filter) with
a brush under running water.
6. Replace the water drain valve (with water filter)
and close the drain plugs.
(Take care not to lose the O ring)
7. Close all hot water fixtures.
8. Open the water supply valve and check that
water does not leak from the drain plugs or water
drain valve (with water filter).

There will be no damage to the system if the water is shut off, you can go the extra step of turning off the breaker. The filter is located on the water inlet (looking at the unit, lower right side) it's just below the unit facing 90 degrees from the inlet pipe. It's other function is a drain; there should be another drain plumbed into the outlet pipe (left side) once the water is drained from the unit into a bucket, just remove the filter and clean the screen as discribed on the original instructions. Once the filter is cleaned, install the filter close the drain on the outlet side turn on the water and power and check for leaks.

Error 71

EC 71 usually means you are using a battery backup that doesn't produce a pure sine wave. OR you recently had a power outage and it shorted the circuit board. if you have a battery backup try unplugging that and see if it works okay. If not, just call Noritz for a replacement c/b.

How to change a water filter on a Noritz tankless water heater

Turn off your incoming cold water to the tankless. (you should probably do the same with your hot water out line just in case). find the black cap that screws sideways into the cold water connection on the bottom of the unit. unscrew the black cap. the filter is supposed to be attached but it almost always comes off. grab a screw driver and stick it in the hole that the black cap was covering. angle it and drag the filter out. you may end up putting a hole in the filter this way but it doesn't matter if you are replacing the filter anyways. once you pull it out make sure you have a little rubber washer on the new filter or else transfer from the old one. the new filter should actually attach itself nicely onto the black cap so once you've removed the old one all you have to do is screw the black cap/filter combo piece back onto the cold water connection and you're done.

I suppose I should mention you will want to have a bucket under the pipes and everything because your unit will empty all the water that was in the unit out of that hole.

I have a Model N-069M and i get a flashing code 16. I just had the unit flushed two days ago and i still get the same code. thanks for any help

I feel your pain. I am experiencing the same issue which started about 3 weeks ago. First it happened twice that first week and we discounted it. Now that my heater has been flushed the same issue is occuring. I called Noritz 3-4 times now and they are saying that I may have high manollowifold pressure and should have that checked.

FollowUp: Plumber determined my Natural Gas inlet line was too small. He Tee'd off before my manifold to other appliances and fed with a 3/4 line. Issue resolved and it has been trouble free since. (Updated 2/2017)

What does F-76 code mean on a Noritz M-069 panel

F76 is a communication error. It usually occurs if you connect or disconnect a quick connect cable or remote control when the tankless heater is connected to electricity. (If you have a quick connect system, make sure you only have 1 remote and 1 quick connect cable.) To get rid of the code, try disconnecting electricity for 20 seconds, reconnecting electricity, and turning the remote on. If the code returns, you may need to replace your quick connect cable, remote cable, or even remote control

F76 is a communication error between two quick connected heaters. To clear the code, disconnect power from both heaters, wait 20 seconds, then reconnect power.

I have a Noritz Tankless outside my home on wall for several years. Works fantastic until now. Controller is going blank intermittently. Able to restart after resetting GFCI, plugging and replugging. On...

It sounds like your GFI is tripping. There are two common reasons for this to happen 1) plugged into another GFI 2) moisture on the gfi. I'd look for evidence of a water leak which is tripping your gfi. Look for puddles, water spotting, water hardness, etc.
